waitwhat? today morning #ubuntu told me I have awaiting *security* updates but I can install them only if I have Ubuntu Pro. How come it is good idea to disallow installing security things?Or this is just a bad #UX and I do can install it in some way? #linux

@kkarpieszuk You can't. This approach and snap are reasons, why I've decided to move from Ubuntu after 15+ years of happy life.

@Marv ok, reading this https://askubuntu.com/a/1453309 I see it is in fact bad UX. They did not make Ubuntu worse - they are trying to make it better but only for Pro users

@kkarpieszuk #Linux should be better for everyone. I agree with payments for professional support in the commercial sphere, but for casual, home, hobbyists users?

@Marv after all, if we ignore the fatal UX for this window prompting "hey we have a security updates which you cannot install unless you are pro user" it is not so bad: - you can still use Ubuntu as you did (which means the sec updates will be available when mainstream channel have them)- you can use this pro channel to get themquicker than anyone else- if you use it for personal use, you can get them for free (although I did not check what they do with your data)- if you are pro, which means you are maintaining quite big computer network then pay for it (which sounds fair)They absolutely should change the UX, the way how they communicate it

@kkarpieszuk Ubuntu provide (free) support for older operating systems for a certain, pre-specified, length of time. Ideally you update to a newer Ubuntu release before support endsCompanies with critical infrastructure on older Ubuntu version can pay for longer support than was originally said. I think it's reasonable

@kkarpieszuk The only way I can see this as something legitimate, when you are running ancient/retired version of ubuntu that needs a subscription to get extended support. So maybe just a bug or an ancient system. #ubuntu #linux

@nuddlegg @kkarpieszuk What version of Ubuntu are you running? My understanding was that the only time Ubuntu Pro should make any difference for security updates, is if the install is a version old enough to be past standard update support. Not ideal, but apparently before Ubuntu Pro, there wouldn't have been any updates at all for unsupported versions. Not sure if this applies to your install though.

@kkarpieszuk @nuddlegg Hmmm... I don't know then. 22.04 is supported until 2027. Doesn't sound right to me, but not sure what's up with that.

@ecosdelfuturo @Blort @nuddlegg yup. In so called meantime I read their legal docs :) They do not collect much data, though they allow theirself to share them with any reasonable 3rd party subjects and provide to legal services as per request. Sounds spooky but in the era of Fb not so bad. The question is do you want to have "faster" sec updates by resigning from your sense of freedom and privacy, or you want to stay with the same speed of sec updates delivery and the same Linux experience.

@kkarpieszuk @Blort @nuddlegg I was able to register with an email mask without any problem. I don't really consider it to be particularly relevant to my privacy. Much less of a concern, certainly, than using any google service.

@kkarpieszuk @ecosdelfuturo @Blort @nuddlegg If it was about having the most recent applications, then ok. But delaying security updates, because not using pro, could potentially put users into the risk.

@kkarpieszukUbuntu Pro was always kind of a weird concept to me. Like I understand why it exists, but specifically locking out certain security updates for a while so Ubuntu Pro users can get it first is seriously odd... Like, feature updates, sure, but you don't lock out security updates, even if it's just for a limited time
