@bex I've been using @yunohost for about 8 years. It's great! Stable enough to just about be boring, but does pretty much everything I need. I'm no developer, so I appreciate all the good work done into helping track down and help you through many of the common technicalities of self hosting, via the diagnosis tools, especially with selfhosted email.I mainly use it for Nextcloud, Email and Matrix, although I have a few other apps such as Tandoor for family recipes.I've run it both on old PC's at home and on VPS's. Definitely solves more problems for me!#Yunohost #Selfhosting #Nextcloud #Matrix #Synapse #Element #Tandoor #Email

@bjoern @homelab @homelab_de One thing to watch is that often obscure domains can be very cheap to register but then cost an arm and a leg to renew. Always go by the renew cost, not the initial registration cost.

@strypey @joshsjunkdrawer Quite often I see people publish these "cool Peertube channels" blog / fedi posts, and I'm totally here for that. That said, IU'd love it if someone (maybe @FediVideo ?) actually made regular short videos *showing* roundups like these, with clips so it's possible to get a sense of the channels without having to load each channel up in another tab, choose a video sit through the start and repeat for every channel.I'd love more of a "trailer style" summary with a voiceover of why they're cool, with clips showing underneath, possibly with each video around a theme eg, educational, music, technology etc.#Peertube #Fediverse

@chessert Not really. Visit JoinPeertube.org .Find an instance (or "platform" as they like to call it) accepting new registrations. Look at their list of features to make sure they have the ones you want. Take a browse through their trending videos to make sure it's not a Nazi bar. Maybe just check they're not a 1 person operation that will go under in a couple of weeks. That's about it for choosing any Peertube / Fediverse instance. You can go a bit crazy trying to check their whole social graph of who they block / federate with and who does the same with them, but be warned, there be the path of dragons and madness.#Peertube #Fediverse

@elena I just helped a 14yo install a new SSD in their laptop today. Nothing fancy. Beforehand though they were all nervous about just taking the bottom off the laptop. Once we had it off though, they were all questions about what each piece inside was, and independently decided to remove loose screws and pull dust off the GPU fans. Now they're talking about right to repair and what parts they can swap out next. It's so nice to watch someone go from "This mysterious box may not be touched save by replacing it with a new purchase" to "How can I fix/mod/repair this for my needs?"

@aks I've wanted to love KMail for so many years, but every time I try it, it's just missing so much stuff that I use daily. Labels. Conversations view. Filters.I'm curious how Merkuro (sp?) is going. It was a rather nice calendar app that apparently added email, so there's hope there. For the moment though I'm stuck on Thunderbird even if it maddeningly and mystifyingly chooses to not let you use filters outside of the root email folder.I can't believe that FOSS / Linux actually nailed video editing and gaming -two areas once thought impossible - before getting a decent email app.I wonder whatever happened to KDE Raven?#Kmail #Thunderbird #MerkuroMail #FOSS #Linux #KDE #Raven

Ugh. According to the link below, @element is planning to start blocking unverified devices as of next April. This *would* be a good thing given it increases security. The problem is that ElementX still doesn't recognize a bunch of devices as being verified, despite that Element Classic does. (Android and iOS)Not looking forward to trying to explain this to elderly family members overseas who found it too complicated just to log in to Element without physical in-person assistance...The blog link, mentioned:https://matrix.org/blog/2025/11/exclude-insecure-devices/#ElementX #Element #UX #Matrix

@servo launch sponsorship tiers to help fund more rapid development:https://www.phoronix.com/news/Servo-Sponsorship-TiersIMO Servo is still our best chance at a fast, modern alternative to Chrome's Blink renderer taking over the web.Tiers start at as little as $100, but if you don't have that to spare, consider sharing to try and reach potential sponsors who do!#Servo #FOSS #Chrome #Blink

@dave4w Taking time to recover and look after yourself is the pure definition of a productive day. If you don't look after yourself, you ain't going to be producing anything! Hope you enjoyed it!

@cmconseils I was 100% onboard with 1-9. I don't disagree with 10, but it surprised me as I don't see a real reason for it. I mean, sure, don't be "loyal" to them to the point you're giving stuff away for free, but if the pay and benefits are better where you are that the alternatives at the time, what's the point of switching? Maybe it's more that you always want to be looking for something better so you don't get taken advantage of out of intertia? idk

@TheManyVoices @catsalad Adding the ability to edit toots is the one feature introduced to Mastodon that (hopefully?) makes me seem vaguely comprehensible. It's a rare toot that I post that isn't immediately edited because I spotted something I had to fix within 10 seconds of posting... 👀 🙄

@emmalbriant Kind of makes you wonder why they even bothered releasing pages that were 99.9% redacted, as part of only 1% that was released at all. I imagine it's probably some kind of adolescent "troll the libs" thing, but that seems like the kind of thing that makes a talking point even for Republicans pissed off at the whole Epstein debacle.
