Imagine this shows up in a reply on Mastodon. What do you think is going to happen when you report the person for violating your instance’s TOS?And don’t tell me just block them. Because these folks can and will generate a flood of attackers that will drive people offline. And Meta is fine with that.I’d love to see the networks linked, but not without a clear explanation of how this problem gets solved. https://neuromatch.social/@jonny/111633121548703898

@nazgul Interestingly, on Threads there is a vocal community against federation with Mastodon for the same reason – fear of abuse and bad actors on instances with poor moderation practices.

@anderspuck @nazgul this doesn't surprise me - and they're not wrong. People are quick to forget or ignore the many many bad actors and nasty places on the Fediverse. The difference is Meta has a Billion dollar piggy bank to pay for the techs to maintain the blocklists and do the moderation. Not quite the same in the Fediverse. It's not an equal comparison by any means.

@chris @nazgul True, but I guess the burden of moderation will be similar regardless how the Fediverse grows. I think Mastodon will need to develop more tools like subscription block lists for this to be manageable for small servers in the future.

@anderspuck @nazgul for sure. It's an inevitable problem that the non-mega-corporate entities will have to deal with somehow. Perhaps there will be some techincal ways/tools to make it easier but regardless, if ActivityPub becomes the basis of a vibrant and widespread #OpenSocialWeb it's gonna be ... a chore ... for moderators.

@chris @anderspuck Having *worked* in Meta’s moderation group, I’ll take Mastodon’s any day. It may not scale, but it’s ethical.Don’t get me wrong. Meta’s folks in the trenches are trying hard. They care. But the company doesn’t.Besides, Meta’s moderation doesn’t scale either. They couldn’t prevent that stuff even if they wanted to. Nobody has successfully moderated at that scale. But only one company has managed to screw up so badly that they’ve aided genocide multiple times.

@nazgul @chris @anderspuck I don't think it could scale, but even if it could, Meta wouldn't want to. Effective moderation isn't a good thing for them. They need enough to avoid legal trouble and stay advertiser-friendly. Beyond that, the more they moderate, the more they end up forced to make editorial decisions, and every decision angers someone. If they were to purge the transphobia, they'd have angry Republicans passing laws to target them, for example. It's safer for them to remain unable.

@Qybat @nazgul @chris My impression is that they are trying to deal with it algorithmically like they have done on Facebook and Instagram by downrating political content and news in general. This will make the platform less interesting as a venue for that stuff.

@anderspuck @nazgul @chris Perhaps. But political content is disliked by advertisers, even if it is makes up for that in sheer views.Content moderation might be one of the few things that GPT models are good for.

@Qybat @nazgul @chris Agree. Meta has identified the profitable part of Twitter, and they are aiming to take over that traffic while leaving the political stuff for other platforms. They will be happy to be the place for sports and cat pictures.

@anderspuck @Qybat @chris I’m not sure I agree with that. They already have Instagram and Facebook for that. TikTok is eating their shorts (hah). I think what Twitter had that Meta would love is to be the world’s zeitgeist. It doesn’t have to make money, but it needs to be the place people go to get the latest news and reactions. Aside from the cachet, it’s a data goldmine.

@nazgul @Qybat @chris I don’t want to sound too certain because I’ve only had access to Threads for about 10 days. But my experience so far matches what @taylorlorenz writes here. They really seem to go out of their way to avoid showing me the political stuff that I am interested in and instead push me toward cozy feel-good stuff.

@anderspuck Same, here! Created an account to give it a try (well, I had to jump on the hype train) and deleted it three days later because of the huge amount of spam, hate speech and outright censorship of anyone criticizing said hate speech by hiding their comments for being “sensitive“. At first, I found the whole #fedipact to be a rash overreaction, but honestly, after a few days on that hellscape, I‘m now seeing it as at least apt if not an understatement.#threads@mastodonmigration

@anderspuck It seemed good at first, the interface itself made me give it a try and so many accounts were there. It went downhill fast last week, not sure what happened. All porn and no news. I am done there.

@anderspuck @nazgul @Qybat @chris @taylorlorenz Are you staying on Thread? I'm not sure. I like how it's super easy to network and, for example, write about reading experiences, which I like, or post fun stuff, but the downside to Thread is that it is very difficult to find someone who will have an actual conversation about serious topics. I've had many great discussions here on Mastodon though.

@anderspuck @nazgul @Qybat @chris @taylorlorenz That was my impression too. But then they went and ran an ad featuring a troll/sock on Threads spewing out explicit vile transphobia, targeted at trans folks, on IG...

@sarahbeck @nazgul @Qybat @chris @taylorlorenz I'll probably keep the account for the time being, but I doubt I will use it much. Then depending on how their federation goes I can merge it with my Mastodon account at a later point.

@anderspuck @nazgul @Qybat @chris @taylorlorenz @mastodonmigration I’ve been on social media since the early days of Usenet. Out of curiosity I joined threads about a month ago. The attraction escapes me.
