@dryak I don't know enough to say but I figured a kernel that supports running on such old hardware would have drivers for whatever hardware you would use to get USB on such a machine.

@dryak Oh. That might be what you'd want if running ancient DOS but not if running Linux or BSD..

@foone Not some USB C monstrosity where if you get unlucky your laptop decides to charge the grid? 🤡

If you're wondering how far Brianna Wu is gone, she just posted a screenshot of a plural system's profile to target for harassment with the implication they're crazy and not qualified to disagree with her (presumably over her genocide apologism or something).

The latest round of "Rust in the kernel" discourse is really saddening.First, the way a number of the old timers (and maybe aligned new ones? I haven't followed closely) seem to be treating Rust folks is unacceptable.I do see why these ppl experience this as an existential threat both to minority archs and to the ability to easily build your own kernels, & to do so without the whole LLVM stack. But the response is not healthy, productive, or just.

I also believe the whole technical side could be resolved in a way everybody would be happy with tooling that could transpile Rust sources into static C files that could be committed alongside Rust sources and allow anyone to build without additional tooling.

Them: GPU driver written in C could clobber random memory and bring down the system becaue it's overcomplicated hideousness. Instead let's write it in Rust and do multi-language linking.Me: If it's too complex to be safe, write it in Forth and embed a Forth interpreter that won't let it do anything out-of-bounds.

@ireneista @lispi314 @astraluma The concept that lying is usually wrong is something I had to unlearn as an adult, and now make a point of trying to help others unlearn.Lying being "wrong" presupposes the party asking the question has standing to know the answer or know that you are actively refusing to answer. If this isn't the case, and especially if your response will be used to harm you or others, it's not only okay but possibly a duty to lie.

@ireneista @lispi314 @astraluma Yes, I don't like to lie either. Lying is stressful and requires keeping a lot of gratuitous counter-to-fact mental state to maintain consistency, spending cycles you could be doing on something more productive.

@SeanOMik Yes but rm -rf and restore vs spending tens or hundreds of hours doing forensics on corrupted files can't be beat.

@jalefkowit I lived through it and literally the only thing scary was imagining how Republicans were going to react.
