       @mcintosh can’t go wrong with either. IRC has an easier onboarding for new people I think. And you can always bridge it to XMPP later.

       @dave @mcintosh IRC allows anon users. I believe with XMPP they would need a xmpp account somewhere and most people don't have that so you would have to provide one. If you didn't want any anonymous users anyway then perhaps go with XMPP from the start, otherwise I think IRC is easier for you and your users.
