Reagan signed the first no-fault divorce law for CA in 1969, so it's really been more like 50+ years ago.

We should have began with equal responsibility rather than equal rights. Things may have been very different today

I think this is the right answer. Every "right" bestowed on you comes with a requisite responsibility. Those who fail that responsibility lose that right. For example, the right of free speech entails the responsibility to defend the free speech of others, especially those you most disagree with. The right to have a say in the political destiny of the country (i.e. vote) requires you have a stake in that country, whether that is your life in a military draft, or your money in taxes, etc.

@Davey1602 is it really a sacrifice when the same government pays out more in benefits than it takes in taxes? You can't claim to have a monetary stake in this country when you put in less than you take out. Perhaps I should have said net taxpayer, instead.

The 19th gave women rights without responsibility. Men sign up for the draft to vote. Women don't. But the problem is even older then this.
