My experience on fedi is essentially:Bunch of posts talking about opsec, mutual aid and anarchism in broad strokesBunch of posts talking about pretty niche subjects, from anime through to coding to cooking to hydroponics, usually with a "hey, I did this, and if you're interested, you can do it too! here's the instructions <freely shares hours of graft>"Bunch of posts talking about how to stay safe from CovidBunch of posts in languages I don't understand and sometimes don't recogniseAlso, my cat/dog/bunny/lizard is really cute, and I thought you should have a free photo of themFrankly, it's pretty awesome.

Honestly, sometimes I see a post about something (use coding as an example), that I have almost *zero* knowledge about, and the person is so chuffed with themselves that they've solved a problem, and have then taken the time to post the steps needed, and I want to reply with "I've no idea what you're talking about, but you fucking go, motherfucker! Yay for you!"

One of the reasons my experience is like this, is that I tend to apply the following rules:1) I follow back, almost automatically - I do a scan of their timeline to check for obvious red flags, and I check their followers and following - if their followers include a decent amount of people I trust and respect, then I follow back.2) I unfollow reasonably quickly if they post or boost stuff I'm not okay with - which, broadly speaking, is "throwing vulnerable people under the bus/popping off at vulnerable people for raising valid critiques of the status quo". I also unfollow clout-chasers who talk over others, as well.3) I rarely block, but will do so in extreme examples. Rigorous application of 1 and 2 have reduced the need. This has, over time, led to me having a reasonably pleasant experience on here.

@jihadjimmy we can see instances that block us, unless they have completely blocked us on a network level. They just can't see us
