Or, they felt like the opposite of what they.... "were" - 90s here, so bear withAs a Cis guy - bisexual as I am - I'm not able, really to "get it".Still don't give a shit. I'll take your word for it. And I'll cheerfully punt some prick through a door for being a knob about it.

I dunno who needs to hear this (a few people, for sure, me included). It's still okay to enjoy nice things. And fun things. And silly things. And daft things. The world is going to shit. It's been going to shit for many years, and each year, that shit has encroached on more and more people. For a lot of people, 2020 might have the point that it impacted *you*. For others, it might have been the events of the last week. For others, it was 2016. For others, it was 2008. For others it was 2001, or 1989, or 1979 - *and so on and so forth*.This is not to say that events should be ignored or dismissed, I'm absolutely *not* saying that, but it's okay to carve out some time, an oasis if you like, for yourself. You need to keep your strength up, and within that broad statement is...all sorts of things. Listening to music. Cooking. Watching anime. Going for a run. Lifting weights. Playing games. Whatever it is that makes you "you". It's still okay to do all that stuff.Source: NanaSnake, who lived in North-East London through WWII, and kept up her weekly bridge night with the girls through the Blitz, and allegedly the sherry kept flowing as well.

Oh, goody, the cis white people are doing the "well, if you see something from Threads that you don't like, or that offends you, you can just block that person and/or Threads yourself, after you've seen it!"

A lot of my followers are people who have followed me because of a number of Long Covid posts that I've done over the months, so maybe this will cut through here:Imagine a post minimising Covid comes across my timeline, or one that says that people with LC are weak, or lazy or something (I've seen all these). It's all in their head. They should man up. And so on.Imagine how this might upset me, right? So, I block/unfollow, whatever. Problem solved, right? No. Because it plays on my mind. It's too late, I've already seen it.I've been told that I'm somehow "lesser" than others, and that affects me for a long time - a few hours, maybe a few days, making it more difficult for me to go about my life. You understand that, of course you do, and are sympathetic to this. I shouldn't have had to see it in the first place, obviously.I'm not weak because I wanted not to see it, in the first place, no-one would say that.

So, we have Threads, well-known for lack of moderation for open transphobia, sexism, homophobia, racism and other bigotries that people would *much rather not have boosted into their timeline and by the time they've blocked, they've already seen it and it's too late*.THIS is why Threads is being pre-emptively blocked, and not because it's a "Satanic Panic" or "leftist moral panic", as I've seen it termed in one thread. It's self-care and self-protection.

As for the "but it creates echo chambers if you don't let literally everyone in!"a) no it doesn't, there's plenty of places to seek/be shown differing opinionsb) I don't care. The chances of me learning something life-alteringly brilliant from an account whose profile pic is a statue or a man holding a fish are slim enough that I'll risk missing out.

My experience on fedi is essentially:Bunch of posts talking about opsec, mutual aid and anarchism in broad strokesBunch of posts talking about pretty niche subjects, from anime through to coding to cooking to hydroponics, usually with a "hey, I did this, and if you're interested, you can do it too! here's the instructions <freely shares hours of graft>"Bunch of posts talking about how to stay safe from CovidBunch of posts in languages I don't understand and sometimes don't recogniseAlso, my cat/dog/bunny/lizard is really cute, and I thought you should have a free photo of themFrankly, it's pretty awesome.

Honestly, sometimes I see a post about something (use coding as an example), that I have almost *zero* knowledge about, and the person is so chuffed with themselves that they've solved a problem, and have then taken the time to post the steps needed, and I want to reply with "I've no idea what you're talking about, but you fucking go, motherfucker! Yay for you!"

One of the reasons my experience is like this, is that I tend to apply the following rules:1) I follow back, almost automatically - I do a scan of their timeline to check for obvious red flags, and I check their followers and following - if their followers include a decent amount of people I trust and respect, then I follow back.2) I unfollow reasonably quickly if they post or boost stuff I'm not okay with - which, broadly speaking, is "throwing vulnerable people under the bus/popping off at vulnerable people for raising valid critiques of the status quo". I also unfollow clout-chasers who talk over others, as well.3) I rarely block, but will do so in extreme examples. Rigorous application of 1 and 2 have reduced the need. This has, over time, led to me having a reasonably pleasant experience on here.

Shout-out to my fellow Covid survivors and Long Covid sufferers:Getting Covid was NOT a result of poor choices on your behalf!--------------------------------Why am I posting this?Because there's a thread going round that, due to a few unfortunate turns of phrase, implies that getting or avoiding Covid is a choice that individuals can make for themselves. Now, this is simply not true. You CAN (and should) make choices to MITIGATE RISK - mask-wearing, vaccines if available to you, avoiding unnecessary gatherings etc. But you CANNOT simply "choose" *not to get Covid*. It is very likely, for most people, that they will sometimes find themselves in positions where even the best defences might prove inadequate - if you're an essential worker, if you've been forced back into the office, if you're a parent with school-age children, and so on and forth. So if you *have* had Covid, despite taking all the precautions that you could, please:Do not let yourself be gaslit into thinking you could have made better choices. You've enough to deal with without that.Love and solidarity.

A few weeks back, I glumly noted a small trend I'd spotted:Amongst people who had *not* had Covid, there's a (small) subset of people who believe that getting Covid can only be a matter of poor choices, of ignoring the science, of being blase in the face of a pandemic. My experiences over the past few days cemented that view, unfortunately. For some people, in 2020 and 2021, this *may* have been true - I'm thinking here of the Covid-deniers who gleefully went around unmasked pre-vaccines whilst WFH was still the norm and attended large gatherings whilst all the official advice was...well, don't. And then they got Covid, and hey - who didn't feel a little bit of schadenfreude? (this DOES NOT include essential/front-line workers who were given no choice, to be clear)But in 2022 and 2023, as the advice fell away, and we *cough* returned to normal, this is *much* harder to justify. The minority of people who are left still being cautious are in an almost impossible position, given the failure of society as a whole to contain it.It reminds me a little of people who use terms like "fight cancer" or "beat cancer" or "lost their battle with cancer". It's ableist as fuck - you're massively outnumbered and whether you "win" or "lose" has little or nothing to do with your own personal response. Studying the blade here isn't going to help.------------------Offline, someone pointed out to me that this might come across as "Covid doomerism" in the sense of "everyone is going to catch it, so you might as well get it done."I don't intend it to. You absolutely should, and I very much mean this from the perspective of someone whose life has been absolutely ruined by Long Covid (I've done a few posts on my Long Covid, and how it's affected me. I - lol - actually forgot to include the fact that I've not worked for 4 months, and am slowly coming to terms with the fact that I might never be able to work again, with all that that implies), do literally everything you can to avoid it. But any "anti-Covid" advocacy at this point *has* to include care for people who have had it, and non-judgement for the same, otherwise it's *just as bad* as the dismissal we get from the Covid-deniers that we're faced with every day.

@AlexanderKingsbury @whatzaname @RD4Anarchy @gerrymcgovern so, not quite.Capitalism is an economic system which is based on the right to own property that you don't occupy or use yourself, and then exclude others from using it, unless they work for you.

Mildly stressed about Mum and her partner coming round tomorrow. Am not, this time, going to have alcohol available beyond 1 bottle between 3 of us, as last time, they both drank more than I was comfortable with, and he started with his bullshit opinions (nothing major, just tired and uninformed)Also, he's super picky about food, so I need to make the most boring-arse English food possible. Last time I did roast chicken, roast potatoes and simple boiled green beans. And he left the fucking beans.I've managed to pick up a cheap turkey crown from the clearance shelf, and have brussels still, so he's getting as traditional a Christmas dinner as I can manage. But I am doing the brussels with chestnuts, bacon and lemon and parsley*, and fuck him if that's got too much flavour.Courtesy of the utterly wonderful Nigella Lawson, these are my staple Christmas brussels recipe (I've added lemon juice to my own version, and generally skip the marsala):https://www.nigella.com/recipes/brussels-sprouts-with-chestnuts-pancetta-and-parsley

@AlexanderKingsbury @whatzaname @RD4Anarchy @gerrymcgovern the "capitalism" bit, the bit that defines it as "capitalism" and not any other form of economics is *specifically* the absentee-ownership part.Me owning my own tools and exchanging my own labour for money (or goods) *isn't* capitalism, and doesn't make me a capitalist, for example. That's just *exchange*, which has always existed before, during and will exist after the (hopeful) passing of "capitalism" as the dominant economic system.
