Intellectually I realize that Google Talk using XMPP was a big deal but personally I never experienced it like that. In the late aughts, during the peak of Google Talk, I had ~1 contact on it. My other contacts were all using regular Jabber servers. You can stay here. Nobody forces you to migrate to #Threads. And if 1 or 2 interesting people are on Threads and I can follow them from here that’s good, no?

@daniel I think the same, I find it better to have access to threads without having to use the app.

@daniel While I felt the loss of google contacts, I still think #XMPP was left stronger from the cooperation (and exposure as a real-world capable protocol) and Google went on to being crushed by new social network messaging systems...Also yes, I hope the fediverse community is not weak enough to be ripped apart by a "major" operator -- and just refusing to connect with a party because they could disconnect at some point is a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy...

@daniel Maybe it didn't have as much impact as some people are claiming, but it could be a reason why XMPP is not more popular, if people found it not as "compatible" as they were expecting. There's loads of examples of #enshittification/"embrace extend extinguish" in the last 20 years.Personally I do not want the fediverse to come to the same fate 🤔I am blocking threads from my instance, but no-one will care as there are only 3 users on it!

@daniel actually I had my main acc move zo gtalk for a whilethat was back then when transports to ICQ/MSN were more important than retaining the primary XMPP-ID.So I had tons of contacts available in some relatively decent web interface (and some desktop clients of course) and my xmpp-id was identical to my email adress. But I was one of the guys who got hit by the end of Google Reader too.
