@retrohondajunki @timkmak An impossible standard to meet, considering how the Russian people are already claiming (and have been since 2014) that the very existence of a Ukrainian state is an attack on them.Should have ended this sentence at "attack Russia."

@angdraug When the masses of the Russian ppl willingly enlist to fight in Ukraine, that war will become unmanageable. Currently they see it as Putin's war.

@retrohondajunki My grandmother volunteered in 1941 and joined the Red Army as a combat medic. She was enough of an outlier that her own sister held a grudge against her over this until she died of old age. I know because I heard them bicker about it a lot. Even after Nazis started rounding up Jews and burning villages, people didn't voluntarily enlist. The whole "Great Patriotic War" myth is a lie. If Russia is attacked, noone's gonna enlist voluntarily, except people who already did for money.

Or unwilling to object.E.g. my grandpa spent time in jail for beating up a local Nazi (SA guy insulting my grandma). And though my grandpa was acquitted (a "case" of honour), he was told to join the Wehrmacht so that people (and the state) wouldn't question his loyalty. And so he did.As a social democrat he wasn't keen about the Nazis. But he wasn't keen about repercussions either.

@t_mkdf @kravietz @retrohondajunki This is why demanding that Ukraine fights Russia without hurting the feelings of the Russian people is ridiculous. Authoritarians always find ways to make people fight their wars, it is their capacity to wage war that has to be destroyed, not just their will to fight. And that is going to take many strikes at military industry and infrastructure deep behind the line of engagement, deep inside Russia. This war will get a lot uglier before it ends.

@t_mkdfPrecisely so. As long as people do what is expected of them, Putin doesn't care what they babble about in their kitchens (as a popular Russian cliché says). More worryingly, there's quite a lot of evidence that Putin's policy is to some extent data-driven — that is, it's not 100% whims of one authoritarian leader, but they continuously do social polling and test how much people are willing to take and what's the best approach to make them do what is expected of them.@angdraug @retrohondajunki

@angdraug100% agreed, this war isn't fought by winning the hearts of residents of Russia, because those who could be convinced already left. The war is fought by making Russian army physically incapable of invading Ukraine.@t_mkdf @retrohondajunki
