@mmasnick I can confirm. When @juddlegum and @caseynewton reported that Twitter gave money to RAGA, Twitter's leaders admitted that they were basically forced to do that by ongoing legal harassment of the company by the likes of Ken Paxton.https://popular.info/p/twitter-donates-25000-to-anti-abortionhttps://www.texastribune.org/2022/06/06/texas-ken-paxton-twitter-fake-bots/

@technomancy @skinnylatte Good point. For one, Chinese culture is also where Taoism, the world's oldest anti-authoritarian religion, originated. As yet another white person armchair anthropologist, I'd theorize that the causal relationship between Confucianism and authoritarian governments is not unidirectional.

@skinnylatte @technomancy Yikes. Sounds very similar to the antagonistic blending of Christian and Pagan traditions in Belarus a thousand years ago (which is how we ended up with the Pagan ritual of Kaliady becoming a part of Belarusian Christmas tradition).

@skinnylatte In modern Russian online slang, this is called СПГС: Deep Meaning Seeker Syndrome. A very popular kind of brain rot in authoritarian societies.

@skinnylatte In case it's not obvious from the name, it describes someone who keeps looking for hidden meanings (that validate themselves and their world view) in every mundane and random thing.

Peter Strzok, a high profile counter-intelligence professional, is understandably reluctant to speculate. His analysis of the leak about the conflict between FBI Washington field office and federal DOJ and FBI leadership leaves it up the the reader to draw conclusions.https://petestrzok.substack.com/p/time-to-cut-the-leaksMy conclusion is that recently retired FBI DC chief Steve D'Antuono is looking for a job in Trumpland, and stands to benefit from a story that shows him trying to block the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago.

The wide gap in FBI standards between buying location data on the ordinary US citizens in bulk without a warrant, and refusing to even ask for a warrant to extract stolen nuclear secrets from a traitorous former president's residence, is a fine illustration of the difference between "law and order tough on crime" Republican slogans and actual rule of law.https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/03/fbi-finally-admits-to-buying-location-data-on-americans-horrifying-experts/

@kravietz That's the general problem with threats: they dramatically raise the costs and risks of mistakes. If/when the next similar incident goes sideways, the responsibility should be firmly placed on the side that started issuing threats. In 2007, Putin issued a threat. In 2008, Russia invaded Georgia. The West broadly accepted the blatantly false excuse of Georgians "provoking" Russia. Russia keeps issuing threats. Time to take them seriously and prepare for war.

As a long time socialist anti-fascist pacifist anarchist, I find it very awkward to ask this, but this the the world we live in. If you are a European, urge your government to step up the defence spending. If you are an American, vote for Democrats. Last time we had a war like this in Europe, it killed tens of millions. The only way to not let this one spill out of #Ukraine is to send more arms sooner. The time when you get to pay this down with just money is running out.https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/09/12/ukraine-europe-aid-trump/

@gubi Learn from history. Makhnovists put machine guns on horse carriages to defend their democracy. If they had missiles and drones back then, they would have used missiles and drones. They lost the war against the Russian Empire primarily because they ran out of ammunition, and a little because they weren't nationalist enough and turned their back on Bolsheviks. Mussolini and Hitler weren't defeated with flowers, they were defeated by battleships, bombs, and tanks made from American steel.

@gubi Sounds like the only people you care about is the island nation of yourself. Putin calls for extermination of Ukrainians as a people. Makhno's defeat was followed by Holodomor and genocides of Ukrainians, Belarusians, Crimean Tatars, Chechens, and many other peoples. No amount of money can bring back the dead, but here you have the luxury of being able to spend money to save lives, and instead you're doing... whatever this is. Greed? Glee? Indifference? Not sure I even want to know.

@gubi Oh, and the reason Russia spends so little per soldier compared to NATO is the military doctrine Russia used since the times it was still called the Horde: zerg rush with underequipped conscripts, execute those who retreat, declare POWs traitors, raze entire cities to the ground. They call it the "let women make more soldiers" strategy. A military that doesn't value human life, be it their own soldiers or the civilians, is indeed cheap. Tracks that you'd consider this praiseworthy.

@kravietz They've been in history rewriting business since tsarina Catherine II renamed all cities in Southern Ukraine from Tatar to Greek sounding names, and ordered extraction and destruction of archives in the conquered lands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commomwealth.

@retrohondajunki @timkmak An impossible standard to meet, considering how the Russian people are already claiming (and have been since 2014) that the very existence of a Ukrainian state is an attack on them.Should have ended this sentence at "attack Russia."

@retrohondajunki My grandmother volunteered in 1941 and joined the Red Army as a combat medic. She was enough of an outlier that her own sister held a grudge against her over this until she died of old age. I know because I heard them bicker about it a lot. Even after Nazis started rounding up Jews and burning villages, people didn't voluntarily enlist. The whole "Great Patriotic War" myth is a lie. If Russia is attacked, noone's gonna enlist voluntarily, except people who already did for money.
