       Too many people in political and journalistic circles seem not to understand let alone be trying to reckon with the fact that a very sizeable proportion of the right doesn't hear "strongman" as shorthand for "dictator" or "fascist," but as a literal, laudatory description.

       @Wolven in their defence, much of this audience isn't appalled by the terms "dictator" or "fascist" either.Nevertheless your point still stands: much of reporting and communication needs to become clearer and more explicit, because we can't agree on a baseline of common knowledge and common sense anymore.

       @Wolven Their whole politics is polar - strong vs weak. They crave strong, despise weak. They view dictatorship as strong, liberalism as weak. I recall seeing a TV interview where a MAGA supporter replied “Russia has a strong leader like Putin, why can’t we?”. This anecdote explains it perfectly.
