@aral Again, I am really hoping Kolektiva refuses to federate with Meta/threads. Anything Meta is an automatic security hazard

@LukefromDC How exactly? Federating with us won't give them access to your email address, real name or phone number. #Meta can't feed you adverts or force things into your timeline. If an account from there behaves in a way you don't like you can mute or block, just like here. Did you know that #Threads are making #federation opt-in for their users, because some people are freaked about their posts escaping onto the #Fediverse.Irrationality and panic is happening on both sides.@aral

@mackaj @LukefromDC @aral Do fedi users have or will have opt-in too?

@madargon @mackaj @LukefromDC @aral most ActivityPub implementations don't support opt-in federation. federation is literally the reason you join them

So @aral has decided to block with a comment that does nothing to explain why the points I raised are not valid 🙄

@mkljczk @madargon @aral @mackaj They don't have to: any server can refuse to federate with any objectionable server. Gab for instance is a standalone Mastodon instance, but everyone else has them blocked. There is a movement to block threads as well

@LukefromDC @madargon @aral @mackaj Gab turned off federation because they wanted to be a walled garden paywalling basic features and its users were not really interested in federation, actually. There's a difference between per-user opt-in federation (which makes a lot of sense considering privacy) and blocking a single server.

@mkljczk That would be a good option for this particular use case. Maybe in the future Mastodon will add that.@madargon @LukefromDC @aral
