Threads federates because of EU laws against closed SNS. They needed something "ready made" to connect the 4 mastodonts they made, then something easy for spreading more ads. Bluesky has an open protocol (is it?)

@alex yeah it's very disorganized for sure. There's two mega repos with their internal tools, likely none of the internal documentation, and the source code where you have to guess how it works.I'm sure it's a lot of effort to get it going tbh and federation doesn't even work with the main bsky instance so there's little point.
