@Moon okay overall, still maintaining my 4.0. I'm setting up a CTF team and one of my instructors has sourced 6-10 servers and the related networking gear for us to use to set up our own infra.I managed to win my disability case the third go round by representing myself so should be able to afford to transfer to SANS in a year to finish my degree.I'll be attending their CTI Summit next month which will be my first con. I have a group of students interested in considering a trip to DefCon so could use some suggestions for planning.

@fl0wnspc Oh that is so great!The biggest planning thing is, if you want to get a badge and get in there in a decent amount of time, you have to camp out in the signup line overnight. You don't have to all do it, you can have one person pay and pick up everybody's badges. There might be a limit to how many you can pick up but I don't think so. Otherwise, to save cost you'll be eating in casino food courts. Try to get invited to parties, that seriously amplifies the fun and opens employment opportunities by meeting actual "doers".There are articles now like "go ahead and use your laptop at defcon it's not risky" I personally think these are know-nothing contrarians. I saw someone get their laptop wiped while they were using it. make sure your phone's up to date and go ahead and bring your laptop but maybe wipe it before and after the con.TONS OF PEOPLE GET SICK EVERY YEAR AFTER DEFCON, INCLUDING NOW COVID! It is just a fact of life so prepare for it.bring money to buy "homebrew" con badges, these are the most fun things!There are workshops, make sure you have an eventbrite account BEFORE it's time to sign up for the workshops because the good ones fill up in SECONDS, people use scripts to snipe spots so if you have to sign up first you will lose valuable minutes. Make sure you have a second and third choice you can pick immediately if your first choice fills up.I'll try to think of more tips.

@Moon awesome, this is great advice! I'm used to the sniping issue, that's what makes it so hard to get tickets for SchmooCon. One of the students is in our middle college program, where high school students can take college courses their junior and senior year and graduate HS with and A.S. so I need to keep minors in mind. I would bring a burner phone and laptop, I figure if we attempt the CTF we would be marked as fair game for the competition, at least that's how I would be looking at the competition if scope allows.

@feld I have good hand discipline and an autistic sense of personal space that should help some to mitigate the threat. The SANS summit shouldn't be as hectic as something like DefCon or SchmooCon so I think it should offer a good way to gauge how I'll move forward afterwards. John Strand is speaking at the Baltimore BSide in April, which I would really like to attend. He does some really interesting work in Active Defense which along with CTI feels like the space I'm being drawn toward. @SlicerDicer @Moon @jeffcliff

@fl0wnspc oh here's a couple more.to get a room in the same hotel/s as the conference you gotta reserve them way in advance. otherwise, just get one on the strip that's walkable.a couple years they had the conference in multiple casinos, and they were separated by bridge across the strip. It was so awful walking back and forth, both time-wise, energy-wise and from the heat, that we gave up and just only went to things on one side of the conference lol.some people call it LINE-CON because for popular talks the lines will be ENORMOUS. So when you plan, you have to take into account that you might have to be in a line for an hour to get into a desired talk instead of being in another talk.this is just me but maybe get your kids to get business cards they can give if they meet somebody they want to connect back with, or to get a job with. I'd probably have a resume up to date if the students are looking that they can send by email if needed.

@Moon more great advice, thanks! We may be able to make some of our own schwag through the school's printing office to bring if the trip works out. The networking aspect is why I want to start hitting some cons this year. I think I'm at the point where it's just a matter of crossing paths with the right person to find myself back in the working world. I think it may be easier to watch a lot of the talks via the streams afterwards if that avoids spending most of the time in line.What should I be budgeting for a good time? $5k range reasonable?

@fl0wnspc eating isn't too bad as the casinos have cheaper options, it's a little more expensive than normnal but not bad. you won't actually have random expenses except for these things:1. homebrew badges (if you care, I think they're awesome. they are usually 50-200 dollars each depending on how complicated they are)2. it is not uncommon to get invited to lunch as a group or a private dinner and it may be a nicer place.3. they have a big vendor section and often they have deals that only apply in-person at the con. Have CASH. if it's your thing, some vendors even have stuff like weird vintage unixy PCs you'd have to have shipped home, but more likely there's stuff like Pineapples or other intrusion tools. don't bother buying the "burner phones" they're a scam because you still have to register your name to use them, that's done and over with.

@Moon I was just going to stick a mint mobile sim into a prepaid phone so I didn't need to carry my normal phone. What are the most pressing opsec concerns to consider then? If I get tagged as an academic interested in threat analysis and such that could attract some unwelcome attention considering current geopolitical tensions.Stuff like the badges is of interest and I've been setting aside cash just for the cons.

@fl0wnspc I don't think you have to worry about it. You will find plenty of company. I wouldn't even necessarily worry about hiding your real name unless you're concerned about getting linked back to here or something. I didn't use my real name for anything but people did. It's actually not a very hostile place at all unless you leave your laptop's ass hanging out to get pwned. You WILL see people walking around with an antenna hanging out of a bag, siphoning wireless traffic.defcon has wifi. it's very spotty so having internet on your phone is a good idea, usb tether also very good for a lappy.

@fl0wnspc con wifi is WPA3 encrypted so wallofsheep won't catch you on that. they say their wifi is very safe, it's set up to isolate you from other users I guess. I used it but not for anything sensitive.

It was nasty as hell I was at 10,000ft. I had to drive over the mountains to get out down to golden Colorado. Ended up paying for 3 places simultaneously. I was forced to leave Breck as a non resident. The lease? They forced me to pay. Had to pay in golden till I got better and had to work out where I was going in New Mexico and pay so it was guaranteed. Worst experience of my life. Imagine going from super athletic doing skiing at 55-70mph. At one point I was a racer, so yeah I haul ass. To not being able to go up 3 steps. I did not know if I ever was going to recover. The original variant was beyond nasty.

I still got it, contagious as hell by my estimate. I figured I would just ski again later if it blew over. Well so much for that 😂I’m just glad I didn’t have lung damage and I can still dive too. Didn’t turn my lungs to bricks.
