I hate notification systems on desktop computers. I really do. They are not appropriate for the system idiom. More importantly though, I *never* get a notification for something I care about as a notification, whereas I receive notifications (usually from Microsoft) containing literal ads on what feels like a weekly basis or more.PS: Don't use NordVPN, they're very bad actually, every interaction is a giant pain. I only use them cuz nobody else seems to offer static IPs

@tyil My Linux laptop has the most obnoxious notifications of all! Every time I open my laptop I have a lockscreen notification that just says "Files"

@tyil @mcc As a Gentoo user, you know better than anyone that Gentoo is not for everyone, particularly people who don’t want to spend time/energy installing their OS so much as using it.

@mcc@mastodon.social @gordoooo_z@borkr.one Installation is somewhere between 10 and 20 minutes, and the installs last for 5 to 10 years, depending on when I replace the machine. Its not even necessary to do a full reinstall for that, I just do it as a tradition.

@tyil @mcc I’m not implying that you spent hours and hours installing Gentoo, or implying that Gentoo doesn’t have its merits, my point is that “install Gentoo” is 1. not necessarily trivial, especially when, 2. the problem you’re trying to solve is “annoying notification on lock screen of otherwise functional system in daily active daily use”
