Electrical experts:I'm getting a freezer for the garage. It's rated (Volt/ Hz/ Amp/ Watt) 115V, 60Hz, 1.5A, 79.3W.Is there any advantage into getting an extension cord rated for higher wattage or will any 50 foot outdoor extension work find without torching the place? 🔥

@darrenoneill I am not an electrical expert, but I'm something of an electronics repairman and amateur physicist myself. That 80W ratings is probably the most the freezer will ever draw. A good freezer uses very little power to remain cold once it is cold. 50 outdoor extension cord ought to work fine.

@darrenoneill you should use at least a weatherproof 12awg grounded extension cord and you should connect it to a GFCI or have a GFCI extension on it.

@TonyG So, if the outlet isn't GFCI, add this then a 12awg grounded extension cord?https://www.amazon.com/AIDA-Adapter-Single-Grounded-3-Prong/dp/B09W63GH3K

@darrenoneill Thicker cables have less resistance, so you get a lower voltage drop at the end of the cable. But like the other reply said, 80W should be the max draw which is pretty low. I think the American system allows 1600W.Buy a good quality cable. That's usually a good idea.

@DazzaNZ Yes, that's accurate. For my 1500 space heater I needed the super-duper-heavy-duty cable.

@glidedon 25 foot is probably fine if I use the outlet in the ceiling that the garage opener uses. Otherwise, the other outlet is next to the garage door and the freezer will be along the back wall so 25 might be tight going around the perimeter.

@darrenoneill Zero advantage, that is very low amps & watts.

@darrenoneill I look after fridges at work, the new ones have quite a large voltage range for the compressor to run. The data recorders on the fridge controller record the start voltage each time the compressor starts.Yeah, heaters are at the extreme end of current draw. It is best to plug them directly into a wall outlet.

@darrenoneill Agree with all the above. I just point out that 115V * 1.5A = 172.5VA (VA = Watt). It's still pretty low, so any extension should do.Not an electrician, but I remember my physics pretty well :)

@darrenoneill I wouldn't use any longer of an extension cord than needed, cut it to the correct length and install a new plug. Buy both plugs and then you will have 2 new extension cords.

@darrenoneill I would go with a thicker gauge extension cord. I would use an appropiate length also. If 50ft way long use 25ft.

@darrenoneill the problem lately is outdoor extension cords are being cheapened to 14 gauge instead of 12 gauge so they're not quite rated to the full 15 amp 1800 watt load of a domestic wall socket. You can still find 12 gauge but the price has really gone up. 14 gauge handles 10-12 amps so it should be enough for 25-ft run. 50 ft maybe too long for constant load depending on the cable heat it makes but it sounds like you're under 200 Watts so even 50 ft of 14 ga should work.

@darrenoneill i have heard many electricians say you should never run a continuous appliance on an extn cord longer than you have too. so you have a 1 outlet garage. 1 for opener and 1 for everything else.☹️
