For the past year and a half I have been daily driving #postmarketOS on my Oneplus 6T. Sadly, it seems that my time has been cut short due to the shuttering of 2G towers in my area. Since calling on #MobileLinux doesn't work with 4G yet and I require being able to make calls, I am considering switching to either some random Android ROM or maybe a dumbphone without internet access.Either way, I am sad.(Yes, I do live in the US. How did you guess?)#LinuxMobile #Linux

@justsoup We've got to figure out how to get VoLTE working on these devices...https://gitlab.com/postmarketOS/pmaports/-/issues/1878

@craftyguy I have been interested in getting VoLTE working for a while now. When I saw the slow (but steady!) progress ubports was making, even with the support of Halium, I lost hope. Seeing that there is at least some interest in pmOS is amazing though!

@justsoup Do you know how well are XMPP clients working on mobile?I wonder if JMP.chat could be a solution.

@didek I have heard of some people on Ubuntu Touch having success with that.

@justsoup #Librem5 runs #PostmarketOS, works with 4G, plus you will be supporting a company that makes an open hardware phone and that gives back to #mobilelinux community. Also, it is on sale at the moment for $650, which while not exactly cheap, is about as cheap as you can expect to find it.

@jlcrawf @justsoup I use JMP.chat with my Librem5 including their data sim plan. Works pretty well for my limited needs. Though I only make phone calls when on wifi.

@justsoup @craftyguy I thought VoLTE was already supported on Linux mobiles (I'm fairly sure the L5 has it, thought the PinePhone had it too, but not sure).Am I mistaken or is it a specific problem with Android-first devices?

@silmathoron @justsoup ya it works on those, I think because the profiles are in the modem firmware (at least for some carriers), whereas on other things (like sdm845) it must be loaded/configured and on Android I think(?) there's some proprietary userspace junk to do it. @dylanvanassche definitely knows more 😅️

@craftyguy @silmathoron @justsoup The modems of L5 and PP/PPP have the VoLTE profiles and the client builtin. SoCs like SDM845 have the profiles but also a bunch of userspace daemons aka the client. We need toreverse engineer these daemons. They 'activate' support as they trigger VoLTE registration etc.
