I am reading "Pride and Prejudice" with my kid. I never read it before. It is an absolutely fascinating book, and not merely as a time capsule of aristocratic Brits in 19th-century England. I find its insights into male-female relationships to be extraordinary, especially its view of femininity and the pressures that women face in their personal lives. The way that girls are pushed into artistic pursuits merely as a way to attract men was another eye-opener. I should have read this as a teen.

@zonz — too true. Plus too many young guys focus on those loose girls and overlook the nice ones who aren’t throwing themselves at them. @DaemonFools

@ClassicalRae I wish I had read it way earlier in my life. I can see why it ranks as one of the great English-language books ever written.

@zonz I wish I had read any of Jane Austen's books earlier. They are all very good, way better than I would have thought. It took me until my 40s to read them!

@VeddyBadAng I'm very much the same way when it comes to a lot of the great classics... I couldn't be bothered reading them when I was young... But it's good that we're reading them at all, even if a little late!

@zonz Yes, I find myself doing that a lot - I wonder what the big deal is about some of these classics and then read them and turns out, they're actually good. I read "Slaughterhouse Five" a while ago, and while it was very odd, I'm glad I read it so now I know what people are referencing.I've never read Hemingway - I feel like I need to though, just to see what's up.

@zonz I reluctantly read it a long time ago when I was traveling and ran out of things to read. What a surprise. Yes to everything you say. I was also blown away by the quality of writing compared to all the modern stuff I had been reading.
