Every so often I check back in on the multi window protocol and everytime Matthias has to jump through more hoops to appease the Wayland protocol devs to avoid a global coordinates system we've now achieved meta windows that apps can position themselves in https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland-protocols/-/merge_requests/264#note_2192089

Basically an app and all of it's sub windows can be assigned a virtual "workspace" that allows for apps to choose where they place there windows, this is basically a global coordinates system where you don't know the size of the monitor

@BrodieOnLinux I actually like this idea much better than apps just having a global coordinate system available to them. When there are other apps opened already, it allows the compositor to smartly translate the position of the multi-window app to a less cluttered part of the desktop.

@BrodieOnLinux I would be so happy to just open an application and have the window open exactly where I closed it last time. Do I understand correctly that this will no longer be a case?

@Satiah Different problem but that's also being worked on

@technobaboo That's a really weird case because normal apps are simply never going to work in a way that makes sense in that environment, things would need to be modified specifically for that style of system

@BrodieOnLinux I really don't want to see a global coordinate system, unless all compositors allow turning self-positioning windows off. With Wayland, apps are finally appearing on the correct (active) monitor, whereas with X lots of apps and all the windows they create just open on the leftmost monitor (coordinates 0,0), even though my primary and active monitor is to the right of it.Thanks to e. g. KWin rules, users (but not apps) can still place individual windows on specific screens.

@technobaboo It's translatable but it'll never be as good as apps designed for a 3D environment, it'll just get them working

@BrodieOnLinux this sounds interesting. Not sure about the caveats though.

@technobaboo Here's a question, couldn't a 3D compositor just use the coordinates given not as the literal position but as a spacing difference between the windows of the app

@Satiah @BrodieOnLinux That's a compositor issue, not directly tied to Wayland. The only thing that has changed on Wayland is that can't position themselves. A compositor would just need to add a feature to remember last window positions and sizes.

@that_leaflet @Satiah There's a protocol in the works to deal with specifically this https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland-protocols/-/merge_requests/18

@BrodieOnLinux @that_leaflet I'm confused.😛 So there IS a Wayland protocol to restore an application AND it's all windows where I closed them. 😋 So the issue in the top article is no longer a thing?

@technobaboo Having the compositor dynamically move the group?
