@BrodieOnLinux Things might get even more interesting when Windows 10 goes EOL in two years. There is still a surprisingly large number of devices in use that are unsupported by Windows 11.

@BrodieOnLinux I've already tried to mentally prepare people for new PCs or a switch to Linux, but especially elderly people told me that they will just continue using Windows 10.I guess I'll have to force-convert (hardware gift) some PCs in two years, as online banking with an EOL OS is unacceptable. ;)But I'm also involved with a school that happens to have a large amount of computers from 2016 that missed Windows 11 compatibility by one year. We'll see if the budget allows new PCs ...

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/snapd/+bug/1643706With Flatpak one can just do "flatpak override --filesystem=path" and the problem is solved. In my opinion Snap's core design is fundamentally flawed. This starts with the fact that the sandbox is not mandatory and user-configurable (unlike Flatpak) and ends with the walled garden that doesn't allow for third-party repositories. The main issue: I no longer know which distribution to recommend to non-technical people since Ubuntu started to enforce broken snap packages.

The issue why replacing Ubuntu is so difficult is that most supposedly "beginner-friendly" distributions, like Linux Mint, don't notify their users about new distribution releases or about the fact that the current release has reached end of life.Since most users don't follow #Linux blogs, they might use an end of life OS for online banking without knowing that (security) updates have stopped.#Ubuntu has had a release notification and upgrade tool since version 5.10: https://web.archive.org/web/0if_/https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperUpgrades

@fosserytech Thanks, I'll take a look at it!I've heard criticism about Zorin that it is still stuck on Ubuntu 20.04. Do you know by chance what the reason for this is?

@BrodieOnLinux Agreed!I experienced the same with my new laptop, i7 13th gen + dedicated GPU: The fans stay off while surfing the web or doing text-based stuff. The laptop is always cool to the touch. Even after gaming on it, it is still not uncomfortably warm.In comparison to e. g. my X201 Tablet (i7 1st gen), this is really impressive (effectively a passive cooled laptop). The X201t is always at least warm to the touch (it can get uncomfortably warm) and the fans are almost always running.

@BrodieOnLinux According to Tibor Kaputa 99 % of the code is written by him and other paid developers. If there's an internal CLA or all of them agree to the relicensing and the remaining 1 % is rewritten or removed, then there's no GPL violation.https://github.com/SimpleMobileTools/General-Discussion/issues/241#issuecomment-1837837729Does anyone know which developers were paid?

@BrodieOnLinux To me it sounds like he won't be involved in the project in the future at all.So any license infringements will (most likely) be caused by ZipoApps and not him.

@nextcloud Podman with Nextcloud AIOI wish automatic updates would be possible with AIO. All the rest of my infrastructure is automatically updating, only AIO needs special treatment.

@BrodieOnLinux I really don't want to see a global coordinate system, unless all compositors allow turning self-positioning windows off. With Wayland, apps are finally appearing on the correct (active) monitor, whereas with X lots of apps and all the windows they create just open on the leftmost monitor (coordinates 0,0), even though my primary and active monitor is to the right of it.Thanks to e. g. KWin rules, users (but not apps) can still place individual windows on specific screens.

@BrodieOnLinux Support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows 10. Your PC will still work, therefore we recommend moving to Linux (instead of buying a new Windows 11 compatible computer).https://silverblue.fedoraproject.orghttps://kinoite.fedoraproject.org

@BrodieOnLinux You could do the same video about #OsmAnd. As far as I understand the license, their whole UI is not open-source, yet they advertise being open-source and many fans recommend it as such: https://github.com/osmandapp/OsmAnd/blob/master/LICENSEYou can not use their UI code and assets for commercial purposes and you need written permission to publish forks on app stores. Furthermore it is unclear where the license applies, since they only list one example folder and the rest is summarised with "and others".

@BrodieOnLinux I don't see the need for a new term other than trying to "openwash" the project.Restricting the source to "view, but don't touch" (like Vivaldi) or to non-commercial only (like OsmAnd) defeats the point of open-source.We already have lots of terms for non-opensource software: proprietary, freeware, shareware, source-available, etc.. The only reason to add yet another term is to water the term #opensource down, confuse users and present your project in a way that it is not.

Question to the #Fediverse: Does anyone know a #serverless solution to sync calendars and contacts between devices (e. g. #Android and #Thunderbird) that is actively maintained?I use #Syncthing to sync files between all my devices. Maybe there is something file-based to combine with Syncthing? At the moment I use a #selfhosted #Nextcloud server just for these two tasks, but I would much prefer a solution that doesn't require hosting a webservice.

After using #GrapheneOS for a couple of years, I have finally taken a deep dive into its past controversies. What a ride (through archives) that was in the last couple of weeks ...But the main questions I actually wanted to answer were: How is GrapheneOS structured today? How much is its future dependent on a single person? Who is actually leading the project now (seems like it hasn't really changed)?Unfortunately I'm still unsure about all of these. Maybe the Fediverse can help me out?
