In this week's Grammar Girl podcast, we learn that "mansion" comes from the French word for "house." It was originally just a regular house, but our tendency to think of French things as fancy led to "mansion" meaning a big, expensive house.I also investigate a house-related familect: Why would a mother ask a daughter if a boy at school "gave her any house"?PODLINK: https://pod.link/173429229 YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/dw-InJtuoOYTRANSCRIPT: https://grammar-girl.simplecast.com/episodes/house-mansion/transcript#GrammarGirl #podcast

@grammargirl I've been using Google Podcast, but Google is shutting down shop and directing us to YouTube Music (yirgh, no). What other free podcast listening apps are out there? Do they allow one to download episodes for offline listening?

@grammargirl Hey, that's the Pittock Mansion up here in my neck of the woods.

@bbsmooth Cool! It just popped up when I typed "mansion" into Canva. It felt the most "mansion-ish" of the many options. :)

@grammargirlWhere's the dividing line? When does a house become a mansion? Or a Manor? Or a Palace? Or a Cottage? (Or even a Castle?)

@dheadshot It seems subjective to me. One person's mansion is another person's cottage. Having a lot of friends in real estate, I feel confident saying there's no industry definition!(And a quick search shows that Realtor.com agrees: https://www.realtor.com/advice/buy/what-is-a-mansion/)

@grammargirl BTW I got on board your newsletter Nov 17 (after you indicated eventually mentioning the license plate album), and I’ve not received anything since the welcome e-mail that day. Any clues?

@leebennett Yes, points to you! I just thought it was the most mansion-ish of all the stock art mansions, but it seems that many followers from the Portland area recognize it.

Lots of people in Portland are recognizing this image as the Pittock Mansion.I'm starting to feel like I should switch to nothing but mansion content and delight people in a new city every week. :)

@grammargirl and, of course, another English variant of the French maison is manor, which very much carries the association with wealth and upper class status as in "to the manor born"
