Finally watching "For All Mankind" and enjoying it a LOT, but it's really kind of telling that even with as careful and nuanced as it is about how this kind of alt-history would shift elements of race, gender, socioeconomics, socioculture, and technoscience, there's still not 1 mention of the Gallaudet 11, nor any real engagement with how space disability intersect.I'm only in s1, but i'm not seeing anything in searches about that changing in the later seasons. Still liking it. Just a bit of a missed opportunity that could have made a good show even better.

@Wolven Space and disability will intersect at least a bit on several occasions, but whether or not it crosses the threshold for real engagement you’ll have to decide for yourself

@Wolven Interesting, I'd never heard of them. Great show. Slow start, then goes bonkers.

@karlhigley Well, this is my threshold, so I'm kinda doubting ithttps://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3401342

@Wolven Yeah, probably not then (at least not so far.) Portrays some disabilities at various points, doesn’t interrogate the surrounding issues at anything approaching that depth.

@karlhigley Yeah 😕. Like I said, they've done SUCH a good job with other sociocultural and sociotechnical elements; would've loved to see them stick that one, too

@Wolven Wow, TIL of the Gallaudet 11! (clearly I'm not the worlds biggest NASA historian/enthusiast)But that is amazing. I'd never thought that. Would be interesting if NASA decided people with unusual vestibular systems were the only suitable candidates for certain missions, and they selected deaf astronauts or astronaut candidates willing to undergo surgery to achieve that state.

And if you're wondering what I mean by "real engagement," here's my thoughts on the subject: afutureworththinkingabout.com?p=5396

And, honestly, another thing about this show is, many of you know i've been looking for something as inspirational as but also far less uncritically neoliberal THAN The West Wing, and this is hitting that sweet spot really well

@Wolven I've been enjoying it for many reasons, the alternate international history being a big part but also the acting is great and the production design is just fantastic.
