Since everybody seems interested in weird-looking electric cars today, I'll share that I'm especially excited about the Aptera. It's a solar-electric car that is supposed to have up to 1,000 mile range and will be able to charge up to 40 miles a day using the built-in solar panels. Imagine off-the-grid commuting. I'm watching it closely. The target launch date is late next year, and I can't wait! https://aptera.us/

@grammargirl I thought the Aptera was already out? There's a whole Aptera Owners Club. https://www.youtube.com/@ApteraOwnersClub

I feel like I should add/disclose that I made a small investment in the company, but doing so makes me uncomfortable. Do. not. invest. based. on. my. advice. PLEASE. It's probably the riskiest investment I've ever made. I just think it is good technology for the world, and I want to support it.

@glightly It's still just in the preorder phase. The details on that channel say, "I am just a preorder holder, an investor and a huge fan." A lot of the people who have preordered are really excited about it. :)

@grammargirl Launching any day now since 2006. They've already been liquidated once. In may their annual report for the prior year showed that they'd halved the number of employees and had an operating loss of 60+ million against 40 million in assets. If they have more than a handful of prototypes, I'd be very surprised.

@Infoseepage Yeah, they currently have only a small number of prototypes. They're building the cars that will go through stuff like crash tests right now.

@grammargirl I love to look at really weird think outside the box designs for smaller vehicles and generally think that 90% of the vehicle trips on the road could be taken in something much smaller and more energy efficient.I've taken rides in things like a prototype of a Commuter Cars Tango and a Smart Fortwo. And like things like the Fiat 500.

@grammargirl @pluralistic really looking forward to eventually getting an #Aptera. I’ve been trying to buy an enclosed, three wheel, electric commuter for years. That’s all the car I need for most of my transportation needs.I like the #Carver, but it’s (1) not available in the USA and (2) an ā€œenclosed scooterā€ which simply isn’t safe enough for American highways. https://carver.earth/Same story with #Arcimoto — not really a car https://www.arcimoto.com/

@grammargirlIn December 2023 investing in an EV company seems extremely risky. But I'm sure by 2024 EVs will be cool again.

@acm_redfox That's what I thought at first too, but the website says "Aptera’s rear cargo space is about 32.5 cubic feet, the size of a small hot tub or a large refrigerator, and big enough for 2 adults to sleep in. Here’s an idea of what you can fit inside." And then there's a photo: https://aptera.us/faq/

@grammargirl I love the concept and design. I understand what they're trying to achieve, as I'm a car nut and familiar with marine & automobile composite construction. As Colin Chapman of Lotus said, "Add lightness." This would absolutely handle 95%+ of my actual driving needs. And it eliminates many of the current EV hassles as a suburban apartment dweller.I want one. I'm rooting for #Aptera, though it feels pricey for what it is.

@undead It's a two-seater, so definitely not for families with kids. And I don't know about chains. I agree it doesn't look like a car you want to drive through 2 feet of snow. But for commuting in a moderate climate, it looks great, which would still meet the needs of a lot of people.
