Can someone help me understand what's wrong with X that #wayland was necessary? Or in what ways does wayland improve on X? Are there noticeable differences from the user's perspective?#xwindows #xorg

@BigEatie Wayland hascleaner codebasetighter permission controlbetter capabilities for handling different physical displaysbetter performanceSwitching from xorg to Wayland is definitely a tradeoff - I'll run whichever has my preferred window manager available (that was #hyprland for most of this year, until I switched to #exwm)

@mitchmarq42xyz code bases?Does X lack meaningfully in performance? I haven't noticed if so. For instance, comparing to #windows (which is the only other thing I can really compare to) everything I've used in X feels crisp.I guess if you're using a physical display setup not supported by X that makes sense.I'd heard of the permission control thing, but I guess I didn't really understand why I should care. In some cases it almost sounded like a hindrance to me.

@BigEatie coming back to X after Wayland, the performance hit is just barely noticeable.

@mitchmarq42xyz I wonder if some of that is emacs? At times, for me at least, #exwm feels marginally slower than #i3wm Also, welcome to the exwm army!
