How undemocratic was Kissinger? Here's one example:He chaired the committee that oversaw CIA operations to undermine the Allende government in Chile and wrote: “I don’t see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves.”https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/nov/30/henry-kissinger-chile-argentina-south-america

And there's this:"Kissinger was a man “whose historical brilliance was never able to conceal his profound moral wretchedness”, wrote Juan Gabriel Valdés, Chile’s ambassador in the US."

@petergleick When people say "communism has never worked!" point them to examples like these. If communism was so fragile that it inevitably falls apart on its own, why has the US spent so much money and invested so much military might to snuff it out? The biggest flaw of communism is that apparently it doesn't pop up in countries that can withstand a US-backed coup and US-funded fascist death squads. It's also a useful example for people who equate communism with authoritarianism.

@petergleick It's reminiscent of that Futurama episode where Zapp Brannigan was serving on the Planet Express ship and mutinied:"On what grounds, you oaf?""Failure to prevent a mutiny."
