@petergleick When people say "communism has never worked!" point them to examples like these.If communism was so fragile that it inevitably falls apart on its own, why has the US spent so much money and invested so much military might to snuff it out? The biggest flaw of communism is that apparently it doesn't pop up in countries that can withstand a US-backed coup and US-funded fascist death squads.It's also a useful example for people who equate communism with authoritarianism.

@stux It's maddening when fascists co-opt language and render it useless."Fake news" was originally about right-wing sites literally making stories up and passing them off as real. Now we roll our eyes whenever someone says it, because that phrase has been utterly ruined.Now we cringe when people talk about "free speech," because they're doing an annoyingly good job at turning it into a dog whistle for "hate speech."I'm honestly not sure what we can do other than be aware of it.

@JessTheUnstill @RickiTarr That's a great point. When you allow the idea that some people's lives are worth more than others, you introduce cracks in the social contact. If it doesn't cover all of us, without exception, it becomes a matter of debate. What could undermine a community more thoroughly than a disagreement about who the community will protect and who it won't?Even just having that discussion makes everyone less safe.
