The "Z" and "V" symbols have a complicated history in #Russia — originally taken from 24 February 2022 tactical markings of different invasion columns, they promptly became the new "patriotic symbols". Plenty of Russian drivers posted them on their cars, Russian military channels replaced the respective Cyrillic letters with Z and V to highlight their allegiance. People were arrested for even removing the Z-banners, whose stylistycs often coincided with German swastika.Gradually, the trend withered away as reality of the war caught up and stupidity of "we can repeat Berlin!" sabre rattling became rather evident. Some "Z-patriots" even reported their cars were vandalized. Now it seems the "Z" stylistics seems to be returning in paraphrase: a growing movement of soldiers' mothers and wives, calling for their return from the front line, started to display stickers with their demands. Using the Z stylistics is actually quite smart, as on on hand it displays their allegiance while allowing them to say what they want.Whether this is going to change in Russian society is unknown, as its passivity seems to be rock solid, but the trend is interesting.Just posting more photo as a sample, more can be found here:https://t.me/Airborne1126/8986?single

@kravietz I've been thinking about culture hijacking these symbols for long time.Iius they also have a peculiar feature of being (or an inch away from) symbols mishandling of which constitutes a desecration. E.g. there where criminal cases for people trying to deface or damage these. Meaning people would prefer not to touch them.Ripe spot for culture hacking!

@kravietz Here's an anthropologists take[1] (in Russian) one the matters. She likens it to a new shoot emerging on barren landscape of (domestic) Russian civil society. Bleak it may seem (they don't root for unequivocal end to the war), that's orders more grassroots organisation. She also explains the mechanics of it, as a kind of weapon of the weak.1: https://yt.artemislena.eu/watch?v=woQHYrsY4CI&t=1597

@kravietz I am curious of where would it go. In the one hand, the comity of solder's mothers ended up the Afghan war. In the other hand, russian society has "developed" since then and now they are even more tolerant to the violence and deaths of each other. The number of coffins would have stopped any reasonable society, but not russians.

@UT3UMSI listened to some interview recently with some Russian opposition figure that would be very relevant here, unfortunately it was one of dozens and I just can't remember where and with whom 🤦‍♂️She said that yes, soldiers' mothers and wives movement is rebirth of civil society in Russian, born out of necessity, but it may be very short lived because Moscow learned how to manage them. She brought examples of the actual organization called Committee of Soldiers' Mothers which was very active in Chechnya and which played a huge role in delivering the news of Russian losses there to the Russian society. Then there were Mothers of Beslan. Then there was the last year's movement of wives and mothers.Kremlin has dealt with all of these quite efficiently, by a combination of money, bullying, blackmail, black PR and tricks like creating loyal organizations with identical names and giving them prime time on state TV.It took a few years to suppress the first two organizations as they had some brand and respect among society, last year's movement didn't last a month.

@kravietz I mean not only the kremlin dirty moves, but general indifference to losses and war. In my opinion internal hate in russia is so high, that they are actually happy with each other's deaths.Even this one, with wives - they are not claiming to stop the war. Maybe they are dodging the repressive laws. Maybe they just not happy with the efficiency of the war and asking to rotate fresh meat to the front line to make a bigger progress.

@UT3UMSOh, by all means — each of the wives and mothers video starts with "first we want to highlight we're not against the SVO". It's all about rotation and holidays among those who are still alive.I lost any hope on the civil society in Russia, because whoever is left there willingly accepted their role as serfs. They simply turned back to the old Russian survival tactics of "let's stick our heads into the sand and hope the bad luck hits someone else".

@kravietz yeah, that's what I mean. In the other hand - prigozhyn had enough power and money. Though he chooses negotiations - договорняки. Same with the guy who lost wife and daughter in Zimnyaya Vishnya pool accident. He was the most loud among the protestors, but he got quiet as soon as he received a membership in the party. I bet those wives will shut up after getting extra 100$
