I'm at the Intel Innovation conference today in San Jose. I expect a coming-out party for Meteor Lake, Intel's next-gen PC processor arriving later this year. Plus lots of chatter about chipmaking, AI, Xeon, development software. It wouldn't be an Intel event without lots of 300mm wafers. 1/n#Intel #processors #semiconductors #chips

Some background: yesterday's piece on Intel's adoption of glass substrates as a new foundation for its processors. TL;dr faster, more power efficient, less warping, bigger chip packages, arriving later in the decade. But more expensive to start. 2/n https://www.cnet.com/tech/computing/features/inside-intels-chip-factory-i-saw-the-future-and-its-plain-old-glass/

CEO Pat Gelsinger, who returned in 2021 to lead Intel's 4-year effort to claw its way back to processor manufacturing leadership, trots out on stage and with a few push-ups, presumably to demonstrate his own vigor and by proxy Intel's. 3/n

Gelsinger, unusually open about his Christianity compared to most execs, drops in a religious reference to his chipmaking job: "God has given us this unique gift: silicon." 4/n

Gelsinger shows off his coding skills (on his T-shirt) to make the case that AI coding is easier. Stability.ai will buy 4,000 Intel Gaudi AI processors, overseen by Xeon server chips, for what he says will be the largest AI machine in Europe. 5/n#Intel #AI #stabilityai

"Moore's Law is alive and well," Gelsinger says (again). Intel is headed toward 1 trillion transistors on a single processor by the end of the decade. Note that Moore's Law is about transistor count on chips, not the cost per transistor, which is now increasing. 6/n#Intel #MooresLaw #processors

Intel's Meteor Lake processor, now formally called simply Core Ultra, will go on sale December 14, Gelsinger says. "Intel Meteor Lake is a tour de force," he boasts, talking about its Intel 4 compute tile and built-in AI acceleration. Here's our story. https://www.cnet.com/tech/computing/intel-sneaks-battery-saving-tricks-into-its-meteor-lake-pc-processor/ 7/n

Intel's Arrow Lake PC processor is in the works for 2024, too. Here's a 300mm wafer studded with Arrow Lake compute tiles built on the Intel 20A manufacturing process — the fourth of the five nodes in four years plan to restore Intel chipmaking competitiveness. 9/n

Surprise! Intel is working not just on a honking big 144-core Sierra Forest Xeon server processor (as announced), but also a 288-core two-tile model that CEO Pat Gelsinger showed off. 10/n#Xeon #Intel #processors

Intel is talking up its Intel 18A manufacturing process, the culmination of its 5N4Y recovery plan. Gelsinger said Intel's 18A PC processor is called Panther Lake. Here he is holding a 300mm wafer of 18A processors (not Panther Lake, though). 11/n#Intel #18A #processors

Intel 18A isn't the last node on the manufacturing process roadmap. For the first time, we saw hints of three more generations. Gelsinger promised next-gen gate all around (RibbonFET) and backside power (PowerVia). High numeric aperture EUV for finer lithography could come with 18A. 12/n

Gelsinger showed a different flavor of its glass substrate technology in which processors were mounted directly to a 300mm wafer of glass. Intel expects glass substrates will do better when it comes to power, speed, and processor size. 13/n
