Watching a mutual ask for printer recs and receive a chorus of tired tech folk going "Just get a Brother, they're fine" and manMANLike this is actually kinda fascinating honestly, Brother is now the best printer brand, the one that every Computer Person recommends, and is it because their printers are good? Their printers are fine, they print, whatever, no, it's because everybody else's printers have gotten Innovated out the wazoo, every innovation making them way worse, until it's gotten to the point where I wouldn't have one in the house even if it were free, and meanwhile Brother's have remained consistently Fine I Guess, which now makes them the best printer manufacturer simply by virtue of them opting out of the Who Can Get Crappiest Fastest raceBrother have gotten to where they are now, by NOT innovating

@mike @ifixcoinops never replaced the toner because it doesn't dump half a cartridge of toner each time you occasionally use it to clean the jets, unlike pretty much any recent Epson inkjet

@ifixcoinops honestly the only innovation I want is tractor paper support on laswr printers so I can print those cheesy dot matrix party banners again.

@ifixcoinops Brother isn’t perfect but they’re the least bad these days. Which is sad.Some of their models are a little difficult to get running well on macOS because they no longer officially support recent macOS versions, but the older OS drivers install just fine, and even without supported drivers they have a (very crappy) app that sorta works.

@smallsees @mike @ifixcoinops my last inkjet (before I bought a Brother laser printer!) was an EPSON, and it was in fact my last inkjet ever for this reason.Sure, my printer has a "waste toner" bucket, but I highly suspect that it's there to keep excess toner out of the printer instead of serving as a mystical place where all my expensive consumables go.

@synec @fluffy @ifixcoinops They brought back the SuperDrive product name after 20 years so who knows, maybe they'll release a Laser Writer that's some kind of AR thing, or running lights for their car, or Christmas decorations...
