1/ I just had a mind-blowing experience with ChatGPT. For context, I speak Russian, it’s the first language I learned, but you wouldn’t know it since I grew up in NYC hearing and speaking English every day. As a result, I speak mostly conversational Russian, my vocabulary easily gets me by when talking to friends and family, but I can’t express nearly the level of depth that I can when I write or speak English.

2/ This morning I decided to try and have a Russian conversation in voice mode with ChatGPT, where I not only had a real discussion to practice my Russian, but also gave ChatGPT the guidance to correct me and tell me whatever words I wasn’t sure about whenever I said something like “I want to say x but I’m not sure how to”.

3/ I swear to you, this was absolutely magical. I know I’m not talking to a real person, but this is actually a better personalized tutor on par with going to a Russian class, better than sitting and chatting with my parents to learn since they’re not going to be teaching me. I don't know what this says for the future of language learning, but the fact this one technology can improve your writing, build software, and speak multiple languages is so fascinating it has to be experienced.

@mergesort I had a similar experience recently with Duolingo’s “Max” mode, which does little AI guided conversations. It gives a topic but then lets you talk freely. It worked really well.I was able to speak conversationally without trying to match a certain expected response and it corrected and explained idioms I misused.I still went and double checked what it told me but this is an area where I think LLMs are really going to shine. Language patterns are their thing.
