1/ Thinking out loud here but here's why I think ChatGPT is so polarizing.ChatGPT is incredibly valuable for people with high functioning critical thinking skills in one way, and incredibly useful for people with lesser developed critical thinking skills in other ways. It is a tool and it’s possible to incorrectly any tool is, which is what we worry about. We can see the flaws of that, and we end up concerning ourselves with how the tool will function when misapplied.

2/ You can learn close to anything about well-documented subject matter you don’t know about with ChatGPT. You can also use ChatGPT to improve your productivity by applying it to a subject where you have domain expertise because you can see where poorly documented topics invoke hallucinations.Because you are living both of those experiences you can see the flaws of crossing the chasm into poorly documented subjects where you don’t have domain expertise and can't fact check ChatGPT's work.

3/ As many of you know that I am pretty far from “let’s replace humans with technology”, and also have an optimistic streak about humanely applying technology into our lives. This isn't an endorsement of abdication of a technology like ChatGPT, but this is a conflicting reality we will all have to grapple with because it is very clear that ChatGPT and LLMs have societal value, and the incentives to create more value will continue to grow the longer they exist.

1/ I just had a mind-blowing experience with ChatGPT. For context, I speak Russian, it’s the first language I learned, but you wouldn’t know it since I grew up in NYC hearing and speaking English every day. As a result, I speak mostly conversational Russian, my vocabulary easily gets me by when talking to friends and family, but I can’t express nearly the level of depth that I can when I write or speak English.

2/ This morning I decided to try and have a Russian conversation in voice mode with ChatGPT, where I not only had a real discussion to practice my Russian, but also gave ChatGPT the guidance to correct me and tell me whatever words I wasn’t sure about whenever I said something like “I want to say x but I’m not sure how to”.

3/ I swear to you, this was absolutely magical. I know I’m not talking to a real person, but this is actually a better personalized tutor on par with going to a Russian class, better than sitting and chatting with my parents to learn since they’re not going to be teaching me. I don't know what this says for the future of language learning, but the fact this one technology can improve your writing, build software, and speak multiple languages is so fascinating it has to be experienced.

@simon Which M2 do you have? I'm curious because the profile between and M2 Air and an M2 Mac Pro are very different. 😅

@simon Got it, thanks a lot! I have an 24GB M2 Air that tends to struggle a bit with local models. I'm not surprised about that, but that's why I was curious if it was more powerful specs or just the models/llamafile that made this better.

There were a lot of people on Mastodon doubting federation would happen (despite a lot of incentives for Meta to federate), but this is a very definitive statement.

Now is probably a good time to mention you can follow me @mergesort@threads.net. If Meta acts in ways that make me uncomfortable I’ll probably end up moving to my own ActivityPub server, but I’ll say that I’ve genuinely been enjoying Threads and the community there. I have been posting both here and there because I don’t want to lose touch with the people here I like, but unfortunately as I wrote about at length, I’ve never truly felt comfortable calling Mastodon my online home. 😔 https://fabisevi.ch/2023/07/17/displaced-and-disillusioned-on-the-internet/

A lifelong friend and very wise neighbor has told me for years that "holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die". I have plenty of life and business goals this year, but my #1 personal goal is to not drink the poison.I've been joking that this year I strive to be less of a hater. I've spent a lot of time over the last few years focused on being more of the person I want to be, this year though I'd also like to focus on being less of who I don't want to be.

Starting to read an article only to discover it was generated by AI is now called being slopped in the face. Sorry I do not make the rules.

So let me get this straight. The current state of fediverse integration on Threads is that you can write posts that federate, people can read and reply to them, you can like their replies, but you can't reply back, repost, or even share the post from Threads. And that's how they're gonna leave it.
