Traditional cryptozoology as a "search to identify mysterious animals" is dead as we knew it because the view of #cryptids has moved into a much broader definition of "anything strange, apparently sentient, known almost entirely through stories and witness claims". Here is more evidence to show that the future of cryptozoology is really post-#cryptid #cryptozoology. It's a social science, not zoological. https://nowthisnews.com/news/the-importance-of-cryptids-to-indigenous-cultures

@idoubtit It always had a tinge of a mixup anyway. Nobody was really considering the search for the lesser-spotted-mud-frog cryptozoology, it always had to have something wildly implausible about it. Mythological beings are by that by design.

@john Oh but some do, like Karl Shuker, who loves to tout new findings as examples of cryptozoology. Zoology-based proponents still exist, refusing to ignore popular culture. They are out of touch.

@idoubtit Yeah , but I think they're just hoping to raise the plausibility of bigfoot/nessie/Mokele-mbembe, right?

@idoubtit @john They’re also quite bad about hyping up new species descriptions that, erm, are far from *discoveries*.

@LordGeekington @idoubtit We've discovered Bigfoot! Turns out it's a population of Homo that regularly migrates to the Pacific Northwest of North America, and makes distinctive calls to find more of its kind. We feel this warrants a species designation as they rarely mate outside of their group.

@john @idoubtit And distinctive structure-making behavior H. sapiens is incapable of!

@john Sure. But they have the No True Cryptozoologist syndrome. Anyone who isn’t a professional without paranormal inclinations isn’t a real cryptozoologist. That’s not realistic.
