I want to start playing with #interactivefiction. I tried #zork a few times but always left defeated. What would be the best IF to start with? Something easy and not requiring hours upon hours (and a few A0 sheets for maps)?

@mms You could do worse than recent ifcomp entries: https://ifcomp.org/ . This is very much a living form.

@SJohnRoss From what I see, they all run Z-Machine. How come we still use it 50 years later? Was there no other engine created?:)

@mms There are. You didn't specify that you wanted to avoid z-format games.

@mms Hm. Some random parser-IF recs (depending what flavour of SF you're after):‣ Floatpoint (2005) https://ifdb.org/viewgame?id=01efmfsk4r79mtks‣ Chlorophyll (2015) https://ifdb.org/viewgame?id=fylzkxxyxjvoya6‣ Coloratura (2013) https://ifdb.org/viewgame?id=g0fl99ovcrq2sqzk‣ Rogue of the Multiverse (2010) https://ifdb.org/viewgame?id=clrttol4iw7juc0k‣ Brain Guzzlers from Beyond! @womump I tried floatpoint ans failed running it. Seems like my virtual machine does t support it. I’ll star trying those from the list. Thank you!

@mms Try renaming the downloaded file from .zblorb to .gblorb? (That's the problem that prevents the button working.)

@mms Hm. (The thing is that the blorb wrapper contains a Glulx game file, not Z-code, which is why .zblorb was the wrong extension. But your interpreter doesn't seem to be going by the extension.)What interpreter?

@womump ok, so #freebsd binary of frotz is old (2.51) and does not support glulx. All other .gblorbs fail as well :)

@mms Ah. No version of Frotz will do Glulx, and most vaguely recent works will be Glulx (or something else like TADS 3).If you want a terminal-based interpreter, I think 'glulxe' is the best bet, but dunno if packaged for FreeBSD.
