       1l of (4°C) water weighs 1kg.1kg (of anything) is 1000g.1g of water is 1cm³.Stack 1000 1cm³ blocks to get a 10m high column.This column exerts a pressure of 1 bar at its base.*To heat it by 1°C, you would need 1kcal.And 1N would accelerate it by 1m/s every second.I had to google how many inches are in 7 feet.And I think that's stupid.#Imperial #ImperialUnits #Metric #MetricSystem #America

@Luccus I second this with one exception: nautical miles at sea are easier to calculate than in the metric system.

@Luccus @cstross I lived in America many years ago and remember a popular rhyme for cooks: "A pint is a pound the world around."American pints are only 80% as large as Imperial pints…

@BigJackBrass @Luccus @cstross My landlord in the U.S. once explained to me that the imperial system is more intuitive because these values are derived the human body. He showed my his thumb which was an inch wide. I held mine next to it. There the discussion ended. 👍 😅And: did you know that the inch is officially defined in metric terms hence metric itself?

@cmdrSprocket @BigJackBrass @Luccus @cstross The imperial system, at least for cooking measurements, was designed so you can divide and multiply recipe quantities in your head.Need 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, or 1/6 as much? If one unit is 12 times the other, it's evenly divisible by all of those. One unit that's 16 times the other can be cut in half 4 times and still use the same spoon.Once we got calculators everybody moved to base 10, but a medieval cook who needed 1/3 of 500 grams of flour...

@landley @cstross @BigJackBrass @cmdrSprocket @Luccus Fairly few of them actually, school kept insisting that I *don't* do calculations in my head and instead write everything out in the most tedious of ways.
