@PeterFalkingham I am only allowed four options! But I agree.

@john it's garbage and people/capitalism are misusing it anyway for profit despite the fact that it hurts people.

@john It's real and useful ... for certain problems. But not for every problem. And it can certainly be used for destructive ends as well.Let's say, it's real and neutral.

@john I voted "all hype" because it was closest, but I would have preferred to vote "mostly hype, but also dangerous"

@mike A pretty technically impressive bullshit generator masquerading as a tool?

@john Hype and dangerous. There's no intelligence present, but there are outcomes and decisions (or sometimes, the excuse/alibi for a "blameless decision") with real-world impact on people's lives and livelihoods; potentially even life-ending ones.

@john There's more than one kind of AI.Did you mean to ask only about generative text?

@bjb No, I would include the image generators as well. I deliberately left this somewhat vague, because this is a feelings poll.

@john@sauropods.win Real, useful, dangerous in the sense that it will be deployed by those who don't understand (or don't care about) its limits. Not likely to become an AGI, near a local maxima.

@john Also polls really need to implement > 4 options to useful; A and/or B plus Other would seem to suggest 5 is the absolute lower bound

@john Mostly hype but where it is proving useful - even if the results are imperfect - is in describing images for people who aren't able to see them. They're often richer, more expressive descriptions than the cursory ones provided by some people, and are often - unsurprisingly - much better than no description at all. The blind people I follow here are enthusiastic about it, because it's the first time they've been able to 'see' a lot of things that are otherwise obscure to them.

@JonnyT I think about this every time I (I admit sometimes grudgingly) enter an image description in Mastodon. AI would be better than this, and people with poor vision should have it integrated on their side. Which I think is going to happen, this will be built into OSs.

@johnReal, useful and dangerous.Real: intelligence is a fuzzy concept, but if we never say it's real it's intelligence in the gapsUseful: great autocomplete when I write codeDangerous: information pollution. I am not particularly worried about science fiction super-powered AI.

@john I voted “all hype” but I saw some reaction to your poll I fully agree with. Regarding image generators: I fiddled with firefly the other day for a specific stock-like “photo”: a person (first tried woman than man) wearing a vr-set dissecting something virtual on the table in front of them. On a black background. Firstly: firefly can’t handle “dissecting” or anything like that (surgery was also a no-go), but when I tried alternative like pens and such it also made a mess of it. =>

@john the biggest problems are the horrible ethics, the horrible pollution, and the waste of energy and water.the fact that there are some things machine learning does really well will serve to greatly amplify those problems.

@john I feel like all three apply: it is very much over-hyped, but is nonetheless a powerful tool, and like any powerful tool is potentially dangerous depending on use case. Maybe that's a cop out answer but it's how I feel.

@john other: real but only writhin some very tight constraints, and with hefty caveats. Given that, it does still have the potential to be pretty useful in some contexts and will likely have real economic impacts (including harms to some industries).I don’t believe it’s intelligent in any way I understand the term, or even particularly close. I doubt probabilistic generative models ever will be.(My p(doom) is low.)
