I'm usually bad and just put old gadgets in a drawer until they end up as e-waste, so I recently decided to sell a couple of things on eBay while they are still desirable.Ugh. What a complete pain. People have all kinds of questions, and now one of the two people is trying to return something I mailed ~10 days ago saying I didn't include the box when I did. Never again. I'll just give things way.

@grammargirl I learned this the same way you did. My time is more valuable than the meager funds I’d collect on small items.

@grammargirl What about donating them to women's shelters? Even older / non-smart phones are useful as phones (emergency or otherwise) and tablets, etc., are good for both adults & children (who might need to access study resources).Other gadgets might be useful as well.

@grammargirl Just imagine the happiness of the teenage retro-tech collector who finds your gadgets at the thrift store!

@grammargirl Also have found that very few people want to pay anything like a reasonable price for anything. Like, here I have a used gadget that cost $20. It still works fine. You can't normally find it used. I want $5 for it. Nope. No takers.Found this in garage sales too except that's worse because everyone wants to bargain for stuff... Will you take a dollar? NO!

@Her_Doing They weren't phones or tablets, but yeah, I will donate things in the future.

@grammargirl 👍 And if in doubt, you can call first; you never know what else might be useful. One I know also accepts linens, dishes, etc. to give to women who move from shelter to a permanent home.Electronic gadgets caught my eye because *everyone* needs a phone (& sometimes a secret one no one knows about), and studying is harder if you don't have tablet or laptop.(I know you still need data / internet access, but free wifi is easier to find than funds for electronics.)

@grammargirl I tried that with an iPhone 3G s, 32 gig, needs battery, and SIM card. Does it have the original box? Are there headphones? Does it include a charging cable? Any scratches? Lord, it's 15 years old and I used it for 12 years. What do you want for fifty bucks? It's collectible. A new one in the box just went for over 3K.

@grammargirl Same. I gave up on eBay; it seems like it’s filled up with scammers. 🤷🏻

@grammargirl I’ve decided selling things is rarely worth the trouble unless they’re worth a good bit of money. I had a garage sale a couple of weeks ago and made around $30 for 4 hours of work.

@grammargirl Same problem with Facebook marketplace. Dealing with all the fake engagement, scams, and people looking for an unrealistic price are just way too rampant.

@grammargirl I have taken things to e-cycling repos on the outside chance they might not end up in landfills, but I don’t actually know how well that works. Seattle has RE-PC, which I generally feel better about.http://www.repc.com
