When I look at the Steam gamers who for some reason still use Windows 7 I have to ask the question, besides the UI, at this point surely there is no reason to not just install any Linux distro. Are there even any games you'd want to play that don't work on Linux now

For the record, the only major game I could find that even works on Windows 7 is Rocket League, the rest seem to have Windows 10 as a minium requirement

@BrodieOnLinux These people will run whatever OS came with their computer until the machine dies, and then they buy one with the latest Windows. I doubt their hardware can plan even run games from the last few years.

@alexleduc No they won't, that's the crazy part. These are people that actively choose to use Windows 7 they know how to upgrade, they take all these extra steps to even get shit working but will never leave it

@BrodieOnLinux I recently decided to take the jump and move away from windows and try Linux on my gaming desktop. Partly due to how everything works on the Steamdeck. Sadly, I was shocked to find out that it seems to have “special” settings for Steamdeck. On Steam within Linux, I’m told it only works on Windows or Mac. :(

@BrodieOnLinux I have an Intel Arc A770 and some games still won't run on Linux. There are still some Vulkan features missing in the Intel Mesa Driver implementation. At the moment I can't run Starfield and Alan Wake 2 on Linux. I hope something will change soon.

@BrodieOnLinux I only played one game, and we were very competitive. ET (Enemy Territory) and when Windoze upgraded, the sound drivers for the legacy game stopped working. It's not the platform, WIndows or Linux, it's the drivers that you need for the game to run. I haven't gamed since WIn10

@BrodieOnLinux The only edge case I have not seen anyone else mention is "custom" software. Wine might run the 00s MMO that had its server shut down yonks ago, but not the later made community launcher (though this is just about the literal example of an edge case).That still, of course, doesn't explain why you would want to even keep a Windows 7 machine online for any reason. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

@BrodieOnLinux I believe W7 will still working with Steam soon? So regardless of Linux or W10/11 they'll soon be forced to change OS.

@BrodieOnLinux perhaps they just don't do online multi-player? Much less reason to keep up with the latest games then. There are enough older single player games to last a lifetime.

@BrodieOnLinux here have people resist to use newer os they dont want to relearn stuff and use cracked version of windows 8 and coreldraw x4 with the chinese plugin that cant be found anymore

You’re wrong, I just had a friend just finish using Windows Vista solely because he bought a new laptop in 2021. He just prefers to get shitface drunk and play his video games, all that nerd stuff he doesn’t care about. Internet Explorer loaded Google just fine for him.
