For everyone in the EU currently being spammed with black friday sales:Check if they hiked the price to fake the saleIf they did, they're violating an EU mandate that started this year, that the "before price" HAS to be the lowest of the last 30 days. Fines can go up into the millions, so you really don't want to mess this up :>Feel free to send them a gentle reminder if they do. I have zero sympathy for the practice or the companies doing it. Stop leaning on psychological warfare for sales

@renatoram @anthropy they rarely have the best price. They just exploit customers' laziness and they are more convenient to use

@fdr @anthropy absolutely... they USED to have some really good prices (due to economies of scale), and/or they might have better shipping prices (or you might have Prime), etc.But these days, nah.

@renatoram As a fan of buying in physical retail, I don’t like that I have rational reasons to go for Amazon most of the timein my particular case, rational reasons in Ireland include prime shipping cost: free rather than unpredictableselection: finding some of the obscure stuff in Dublin retail or Irish online shops is not easysupport: any time I had trouble I got a refund if I needed it, with less hassle than I would expectthey deal with customs VAT: if ordering local doesn’t work, I need to import; if it’s from outside EU, I pray for the shipper to use logistics that end up with Irish postal service An Post as they charge mere €3.50 to process my customs (usually just VAT) payment, while almost everyone else (FedEx, DHL, …) charges €15+VAT or similar for the conveniencereliability: if I order local, I hope for An Post; if I order import in or out of EU, I pray for An Post to be the last-mile. Amazon UK has their own delivery in Republic of Ireland, and they’re even more reliable than An Post (who are already reliable)“Go for alternatives!” That’s a sad situation. At least the way I experience things when trying to buy stuff.I’m never touching eBay again if I can help it. Unreliable, unpredictable, ridiculously overpriced shipping for even the smallest items. Barely more reliable as Indiegogo or Kickstarter (at least items generally arrived, even though there was always some pain).I like Thomann for video or music stuff. Various Raspberry Pi sellers have varying degrees of reliability. For local retail, Smyths is great for Switch games (GameStop now being gone), and Harvey Norman and DID have some decent selection on household electronics/electrics. I’ll go to Woodies or IKEA in person for furniture or tools. Photography, Conns Cameras, Bermingham Cameras or Camera Centre. Cex can be great for used stuff (but they hike the prices where they can, so it’s really “can I, personally, find a good deal” not “do they have what I need”). For local online, I mostly don’t do it. Elara might have decent prices so I sometimes check.Still… it’s simply how it is for me: that Amazon often beats others in prices, shipping reliability, and even selection. I wish it didn’t. I wish I could truly just buy local (preferably retail/brick+mortar), pay in euro rather than pounds, and get great selection and reliable delivery. But it’s rare that I can do this.Again, personally, I feel it’s a shame… @fdr @anthropy @flameeyes

@anthropy is that why all kinds of places i visit now say "lowest in 30 days" for seemingly no reason?

@meowski @anthropy Not sure how it is in EU, but in many countries such regulations also exist independently of any larger union like the EU and there are usually sites hosted by the local government that explain what's accepted & isn't both for the customer and the merchant.Checking those sites would just be due diligence, yes.Regulatory changes are also often warned about for several months and as a business owner you /should/ be subscribed to at least some service to keeps track of legislation that impacts your business.

@meowski @anthropy If you didn't feel like using predatory business practices (which start to look suspiciously like a scam too) in the first place, that wouldn't have become a problem.

@lispi314 @anthropy what do you mean "you" ? i don't do xmas sales for my business. prices are always the same until i raise them. when i see a sale that says 10000% off, only $99.99 i just assume bullshit marketing regardless of holidays. if the price is fair, i'll pay it. if not, i won't. saying something is a on sale doesn't have any real meaning. people should know this without needing a bureaucratic nanny state to tell themin burger land we have a different philosophy about free markets than euros. that's why we're here and you're there.

@meowski @anthropy Yeah, in burger land you also tend to consistently overpay and get scammed by businesses like Amazon.Interesting how that goes, no?

@meowski @anthropy Not sure, but it probably costs less than the consequences of increased poverty and armed robberies (guess who does those), so I think I'll take the taxes.
