So... I had my first confirmed #COVID exposure last night - after all the months of isolating, masking, serial testing etc. we have been, and still are, keeping up.I hosted an HOA committee meeting - seven of us total. We were holding these meetings outside on my back deck until the weather got too cold, and then I offered to host in our sunroom, since I wanted to keep participating and figured that would give me more control over the environment. We had the doors closed to isolate the sunroom + guest bath from the rest of the house, our big HEPA filter in the sunroom plus little HEPA filter in the bathroom, Nukit far-UVC lights on a table in the middle facing us, and everyone wearing high-quality (N95 or equivalent) masks.

Since everyone was masked and I had those precautions, I didn't ask people to COVID-test before they came. Aaaaaaaaaand the woman who sat *next to me on the loveseat* for 90 minutes emailed me around 9pm that she went home, COVID-tested because she had a stuffy nose... and tested positive. 😫(She said that she hadn't been feeling unwell before the meeting, and that she had COVID 7 weeks ago so she can't imagine how she got it again. 🙄)

When I replied back to her to thank her for letting me know so promptly, I asked her whether she got her XBB booster this fall. She did not - because she was waiting the 2 months recommended after her previous case! I feel so bad for her. And at least hopefully that means my September booster will offer some additional protection. I'd be more worried if she *had* been boosted recently and had gotten hit anyway.

@mbroome and I both took Enovid right after all the neighbors left, and we left the HEPA filter running - but I turned off the far-UVC lights and opened the sunroom doors as I was putting chairs away after the meeting. Not smart. We left the big HEPA filter running overnight and brought the single-room HEPA filter and the far-UVC lights up to our bedroom for the night, and used Enovid again this morning. So I guess this is the ultimate stress-test of whether my layers of protection actually work... 🤷🏻♀️

We are #Novids so far, by dint of refusing to go along with the societal delusion that this pandemic is over. We *have* been traveling more, doing more social activities, etc. - but only with strong precautions and clear guardrails around exposure minimization and serial testing for any indoor unmasked activities with friends and family. Not gonna lie, I am *extremely* fucking tired of jumping through these hoops, having these conversations, etc.But it feels like every single time I tell someone "we're not as worried about getting COVID itself, so much as getting Long COVID", I get back another story about someone's friend / colleague / relative / college roommate who had to quit their job / can't walk up a flight of stairs / still has "brain fog" (I'm starting to hate that term - let's be real, it's a fucking *brain injury*) after six or twelve or twenty months.

Anyway. We'll keep an eye out for symptoms - and we're planning to test in 48 hours and again 48 hours after that regardless, to try to ensure that if we end up with an asymptomatic (but still contagious) infection, we at least know to rest and isolate... Hopefully this won't trash our family Thanksgiving plans. (Which, by the way, will still involve isolating for five days and serial testing 48 hours in advance and day-of. Because apparently it's March 1323rd, 2020 around here. 🙄)

Update: one of my neighbors kindly pointed out that the CDC recommends masking for 10 days and testing on day 6 following #COVID exposure. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/your-health/if-you-were-exposed.htmlAnd I just dug up the FDA recommendation, which is *three* tests 48 hours apart to rule out asymptomatic infection...https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/safety-communications/home-covid-19-antigen-tests-take-steps-reduce-your-risk-false-negative-results-fda-safetySo I guess combining the CDC and FDA guidance means we will test on days 6, 8, and 10. Just in time for Thanksgiving! 🙄#COVID19 #COVIDisNotOver
