"First-Gen Social Media Users Have Nowhere to Go " on WIREDhttps://www.wired.com/story/first-gen-social-media-users-have-nowhere-to-go/From the article: "...all first-gen social media adopters like myself—and the collective sentiment was one of burnout and disinterest."That's because #millennials have "aged out" of being P1 for these platforms. If the growth curve on its younger demographics is on an upward trajectory, then I'd argue they are actually 'succeeding' - plain and simple.Time for us to accept we are no longer P1 anymore! 🤷♂️

@shrikant Interesting article. As someone who was there at the dawn of the internet ( August 15 1995 when i got my first tcp/ip connection) all i can say is there is no aging out. Times change, networks change but the cycle always turns to a different beast. Back then from bbs to newsgroups to IRC to chatrooms and simultaneously MSN messenger/AOL Im/Yahoo chatrooms etc.

@shrikant Then came the inglorious era of facebook/twitter and the rise of whatsapp. Now people are split across threads, bsky and here. Nature abhors a vacuum and sooner or later its filled.

@jayesh Are you on Discord? Snapchat? Instagram? YouTube Shorts? That's what the new gen is using these days as social networks, apparently. One could argue that millennials are in the same place Gen X was when IRC and newsgroups 'died'. That's why I said 'aging out'.We had a good 30-ish year run. Yes, some among us will adapt to these new services and continue to stay but, increasingly, the internet feels like a different beast. And this time, the gardens have very tall walls.

@shrikant every single one of those. I was an early investor in Discord both financially and user wise . Still use it with nearly 190 servers daily. Yes to shorts and deployed it for my primaries. Instagram of course and by now growing retention threads.. As for a different beast naturally. Change is the only constant. There is no argument there since it’s couched in assumptions. People of my age and I am 47 and can adapt fine and grow.

@jayesh You and I are talking about the same thing but from very different angles.I am amazed at your investment (pun) in the new gen social networks. Not many of your age (and mine) are doing it[0]. The only nitpick I have is that some of it seems to be 'business' rather than 'social' but, like I said, nitpicking. The article seemed to lament that social networks no longer feel 'social'. I argued that was down to the author 'aging out' more than anything else. :)[0] https://sproutsocial.com/insights/new-social-media-demographics/
