@lowqualityfacts They actually had to do that in the rural areas of Arkansas Ozarks until about 1970. Patching through long distance on the old crank phones. It usually took about an hour for the operator to make the connection. They called it a relay. They charged by the minute, very expensive. Sounds funny but true. βοΈ

@lowqualityfacts Dear Low Quality Facts at mstdn social: It is highly dangerous to divulge to the general public at large that phone companies employ third party communications, you could be arrested by the phone police and face serous time behind bars. If you should get arrested by the phone police, your cats π± will have to bail you out.Sincerely, Monica Andrews, Editor-in-chief, #FreePeoplesFreePress News

@lowqualityfacts there's a Carol Burnett sketch that is informative on this -- had Vincent Price, Joel Gray, Lyle Waggoner, and Vicki Lawrence with Carol Burnett as the operator

@lowqualityfacts The phone industry's poorly kept secret is that its basic technology hasn't really changed since the paper-cup-and-string era. Mobile phones just use strings so thin you can't see them.

@lowqualityfacts This is also the reason for the little time offset you can discover while talking on the phone. You know.. these moments where both start talking, pause for two seconds and tell the other one to go ahead at the same time.
