I've been told that #science is a process of refinement towards the truth, and generally not an outright rejection of prior paradigms, but I wonder in what sense that's true. Sure the old theory had predictive power, and the new theory is more accurate and more precise, but each theory brings presuppositions with it that can be totally supplanted by a newer theory. (1/2)

For instance, even though for most things #relativity provides only a minor correction to Newton, relativity has a spacetime which is dynamic and constantly interacting with the world, whereas Newton had a static and separated space and time. So in some sense #Einstein seems like a refinement to Newton, but in another sense it seems to also reject and supplant Newton. So I kind of wonder about the mantra that science is a slow march towards the truth. Parts of it seem like a violent revolution.
