My UK friends will be glad to know that I've discovered the perfect amount of time to microwave my tea.

@tek Well, um, you see, I nearly broke a microwave. I mean I had the tea bag with the metal staple attaching it to a string in a mug in the microwave. It's a miracle it *didn't* get damaged.

It turns out best starting with tap-cold water. Add the teabag, then nuke it for 90 seconds. Perfection!Add the lemon after it’s hot.

@jane_jordan LOL, yikes. That’s always a “fun” surprise.I once found out the hard way that the decor on my plate was metallic.

@tek there is absolutely nothing more British than the horror of realising Americans use microwaves to boil water. I therefore feel I must oblige with an obligatory passive aggressive observation.Kettles were invented in 1891 in Chicago, it's time to update your water boiling technique to the 19th century Chicago.

@smiggs (Trolling aside, it turns out your kettles are much better than ours (240V vs 120V), and our microwaves are much better than yours. Popping a cold cup of coffee into the microwave for a minute to get it nice and hot is as normal for us as nuking a hot dog or burrito.)

@tek as I understand the difference American microwaves are built in whereas as British are freestanding so we usually just buy the cheapest, you can get real fancy ones.I also put already made cold coffee and tea in the microwave especially if I'm working, it goes to waste otherwise. It only needs 30 seconds since it doesn't need to boil unlike when you're making it.The Tea usually tastes weird when I do this though.

@smiggs I’ve only had one built-in microwave. The rest have been freestanding. I saw something that ours are on average much larger and more powerful. Ours is 1500W and could literally fit a turkey, not that we’d nuke a turkey.

@tek yeah we'd consider most microwaves over 1000w commercial, they are about 4x the price and size of the table top ones.
