@MissBehave Did you do that with another device before? I replaced on once and getting it off with a "heat pistol" was o.k. but I didn't get the glue thin enough so there was a slight gap at the edge of the display after placing the new display.

@agx Hi Guido, thx for your reply. no, i haven't done a screen replacement before - so i am quiet nervous if i will get it done! if you have any tips how one should (or should not) do it, i am happy🙂️ since i live in germany, i thought it might take too long and be very uneconomic to send the phone to the US (and back) for the repair by purism.

@MissBehave If I had a 2nd chance with mine I'd have practiced gluing on the panel with hot glue before actually doing it. (E.g. using the old panel and glueing it to a flat surface multiple times). Also for remving: I'm usually too cautious when it comes to applying heat but only if the glue is really hot you can peel of the old display "easily".

@MissBehaveDepending on when you have bought it, it could still be under guarantee. May be best if you get in touch with them first if you haven't already@linmob

@MissBehaveI'm sorry to hear that your warranty isn't covered, but I would be very interested in seeing that process. It would be very beneficial to everyone else@linmob

@Shredd_Tone @linmob So, i finally tried out changing the screen. In total (also the journey is not completley finish), i would say it was an interesting adventure, however in the end i failed to a high degree😅 Here is what happened:1) @purism sended me a whole new frame (see picture, the lower frame is the new one). That means, you do not dissolve the screen and clue a new one to it. Instead you take the innards out of your old phone/frame and operate them into your new one. #Librem5

@Shredd_Tone @linmob @purism 2) For doing that, the Purism Video about Dissassembling the #Librem5 is very helpful. However, the video stops after taking out the Main PCB. For completely switching, you still need to take out the lower part of the phone, where the lower microphone is positioned and where the charger docks (see picture, red circle). For that part, you are on your own without video assistance. It would be nice if Purism could put up a complete video of disassembling. #linux

@Shredd_Tone @linmob @purism 3) So the first thing you have to do is take of the black cover on the lower end, so that you see the green board (see picture1, red circle). Then you take out the board. So far, it is only a few screws.3) Then you have to take of the black "badge" which is clued on the ground of the phone (see picture2, red circle). You can peel that of with your hand. But attention! You need it for your new frame, since there is no badge delivered with it. #linux #librem5

@Shredd_Tone @linmob @purism 4) In the last step, you need to take out the cooper (?) cable (see picture, red circle). It is also clued to the ground but you can peel it of carefully.5) Then your done disassembling and can start reassembling the new frame💪 However, during disassembly three mistakes happened to me:1) The GPS-Module broke of😬 In the video it is stated that you have to be very careful and, well, i can confirm that. Disassembling went well, reassembling did not...

@Shredd_Tone @linmob @purism 2) Somehow i put one of the cables for the WLAN-Module not completely correct back in - at least in the end, when everything was reassembled, it was not long enough to be connected to the module. That means: Everything has to be taken out again to the level of the cables🤨 #linuxmobile #librem5

3) And the biggest problem: I could turn the phone with its new screen back on in the end - also momentarily without GPS and WLAN - but: It is not charging! Somewhere down in the inner guts of the phone something must have went wrong...maybe i connected something not correct, maybe i damaged the cooper cable while peeling it of🤷♂️ Result:I will trying to fix those thing (soldering the GPS, buying a new cable and look if i find something for the charging-problem).#linuxmobile #linux#librem5

However, i do not bet on me getting it full functional again. So, unless your a pro or very confident in assembling phones, it might be the more secure way to send your phone in an let #purism do the screen-change.Wishes:It might be helpful, if a more detailed (dis)assembling video is put online: How do you exactly take the main PCB out (and back in) without breaking the GPS? How to put the cables exactly? #linuxmobile #librem5

And of course: Show the whole disassembling, including the lower board and the cooper cables. And do you need special clue for the later one?...etc...etc.Nevertheless, it was fun and i learned a lot during the process (never did something like this before). And luckily i have a second functioning(!) #Librem5 which i can use as my daily driver😅 I hope the #Linuxphone world keeps expanding so that one day "normal" repair shops can do that stuff for you;)#linuxmobile
