By leaving. I often work secession into my stories (especially Clara and The Star in the Darkness). So, the main character has to realize that it is time to leave. In Clara, the desire was mutual.

In "Skin in the Game," there's a "black court" system that's supposed to allow people engaged in illegal activity to sue each other, rather than shoot it out. Supposedly, law enforcement has no access to black court records.Mobsters don't trust the black courts, but people involved in grey market activities, like the exotic meat trade or selling one's tattooed skin, do. The plot is about a skin artist suing his broker.

The typical response for any character is to just nod and go along with whatever is happening, and figure a way out later. What those later plans involve, well, those depend on the character. But in the moment, just biding one's time is the norm. Cassius has a slightly higher chance of breaking out into violence anyway, but even he has a sense of when to back down.

With a bit o' the old ultra-violence, lol.Or telepathic domination, intimidation, blackmail, bluster, lies, deceit, empty promises, sweet talk, cockteases, sneaking around...Honestly though, I think about it in the opposite order. Violence is always inadvisable and they generally try to solve problems without causing a stir, with violence as a last resort when things go sideways.

Negotiation and then stealth are usually the first resorts before violence is employed for most of my characters (chapter 1 of Wand Smoke: Broken has Canti and Broken doing a lot of skulking around). Even loose cannons like Kashim try to bluff and intimidate before pulling out a sword or shooting someone.Really, I think this question is best inverted. "When does a character resort to violence?" Because even villains with few morals tend to prefer alternatives when available. Violence comes with a lot of unwanted risks and repercussions.I blame TTRPGs and videogames for violence as the assumed normal means of conflict resolution. It just isn't the case in fiction, even in pulp era stuff. Unless spooked, Conan doesn't just cleave someone's head off first. He will at minimum stare at them fiercely with eyes of blue balefire while flexing his steely thews with the subtlety of a panther.

Typical Thursday night:DM: You come upon a camp--[Player]: I'm going to draw my swordDM: But you don't know--[Player]: I'm drawing my swordDM: Okay, they draw their weapons[Player]: And I'm going to attack(Later)DM: So anyway, they could have healed your party completely, given you all new abilities, and helped you solve that tricky riddle from earlier.[Player]: They were hostile.DM: /You/ attacked /them/! What did you expect them to do when you run up with your sword out?

It's really is where the only option at that point are to run away, diplomacy, some kind of purification ritual, or using a form of trickery/wit. In Reel Life, the characters can't use violence because the enemy is invulnerable to physical attacks. I intentionally made sure the heroes have to use their brain to get the job done. So usually it's in the form of a Scooby Doo trap to engage the purification ritual.

Most problems don't have a violent solution. It tends to be a matter of moving something someplace else, which may require asking. Or just doing it.Sometimes the trouble is not knowing something, which means the solution is finding out somehow. Never requires hitting anyone with a hammer. In "Happy Kitten," backing off was always an option. Because nobody cares enough to chase...

They do but over time. As they are young they would solve problems with violence. But as they grow older, and the stakes of the wars/fighting increase, they learn to solve problems more strategically with non lethal methods used.

Discretion is the better part of valor. When, for instance, faced with the local version of a dracolich and death knight, and while armed with the equivalent of a 36 gun frigate, Rhyslin's answer to what they were going to do, was, "Nothing, absolutely nothing. We aren't going to do a thing at all."

First MC that came to mind I wanted to say, "with violence" lol. This is why the characters switch places and take the lead for different things. One is good for typical professional business relations, one for underground mafia-like business, one for intimidating people, one when you need someone more blunt/loud, etc...They pick who is best to handle each situation. And often bolster each other. The loud one can call out BS during a business meeting so that the "friendly" businessman doesn't have to say it himself, and so that their businessman can quickly bring him back under control and look calm and in charge.

In Project Hunter, there are times when Ryan Wallace and his team can use stealth to achieve their objectives, but the results can vary.
