Here's an except from the opening to my next book, Raven Stone, in which I introduce my two main characters:Aran replied with a kiss of his own, which he followed with a warm smile and a hand to fondle a loose strand of brown hair that had fallen over her face. Aran never tired of seeing his wife’s face. Her soft features, her little chin and delicate nose, and the general innocence of her appearance often reminded him of a mouse, though when she became frustrated she took on more the appearance of a chipmunk.

When the villainess reveals her plan to Aella, the elven noble lady. I don't know if most readers would feel the scene is that poignant, but it was for me because I didn't realize what her plan was until that moment. It was like she was telling it to me when she was telling it to Aella. She references a moment from the early part of the story when Aella is introduced that I wrote originally as filler but now was suddenly super important.

I wrote Raven Stone, which is available for preorder now. The biggest setback has been self-publishing it because of content restrictions imposed by my usual service. As for next year, I want to write the sequel, but I'm worried the story I come up with will be awful and meandering.

Hopefully I'll write the sequel to Raven Stone. As for how the community could help me, I'd like to know about people's experiences with self-publishing services like Draft2Digital, IngramSpark, Amazon KDP, etc. I've been working with Draft2Digital mostly and my experiences have been pretty good, but they must have upset some of their retailers because they've imposed new content restrictions on all but Smashwords. I'm looking at IngramSpark, but they're much more complicated, and I have no experience with them, which puts me at a bit of a disadvantage.

I'm not sure how complicated the plot in The Star in the Darkness is, but one thing I noticed that I had to do was keep careful track of what characters knew about other characters and during what times they met relative to their timelines. That second part was particularly important because the elf world and the human world passed time differently, with the elf world passing time more slowly. I accomplished this by keeping a calendar which followed the human world and made notations for the days that passed in the elven world. With regard to readers, eventually I had a character reveal the different time speeds in a conversation, but mostly I revealed it by having characters refer to events in the other character's timeline so the reader can see where they sync up.

The faeries' connection to the land. I state only that it is a mystery that even the elves do not understand. I thought it would be amusing to leave it at that because it adds an air of mystery to Elvene, the story's primary faerie character.
