Somebody was snotty to me on the internet yesterday – I know … big surprise. But I responded politely, thanking them for the actual helpful information at the core of the message. This morning, I received a follow-up comment apologizing for the tone.Sometimes people surprise you and the internet isn’t completely awful.

@grammargirl I'm curious to know what platform this happened on. Or was it on a forum? If so, which one?Hope you have a lovely day.

@grammargirl Thank you for taking the high road and not escalating. If more people did that the world would be a very different place.

@grammargirl this happens to me regularly on various platforms, most recently in a discussion about Israel on Facebook. Responding with empathy while just ignoring the cruel name-calling part does elicit a surprising number of apologies! (That said it can be really exhausting and I would never presume to tell marginalized folks they should be doing it. Plus: is it Improving the Discourse or just sucking up energy I could be putting elsewhere? Dunno)

@grammargirl Yesterday I happened to see something similar here in Mastodon. Person A made a snotty reply to person B, and person B responded by thanking them for clearing up their "misreading" of the comment. Person A seemed caught off guard, then took a much more conciliatory tone thereafter.

@Tunaloo Yeah, it's exhausting, but I think for me, it's more just because the original comment hurt my feelings. It makes me feel better to respond with kindness, but I'm lucky in that I don't get a lot of mean comments. I can imagine it would take more energy to be kind if I were dealing with it every day.

@grammargirl I've had similar experiences. Being polite can be annoying, but I do try to be polite. I may shout and stomp a bit about it first though.

@grammargirl I'm sorry but I disagree with you. A single instance of kindness does not make up for the proliferation of extremism and even domestic terrorism that is rampant against targeted individuals. There is a strong need, I think, for military intervention and the arresting of those who are both spreading disinformation and leveraging hate if there as these are real threats to national security.

@grammargirl You get a lot more of that here than you do in the other place. It's a surprise the first time, yes.

@grammargirl @Tunaloo Kindness and patience work magic, but are in short supply in this 144 character world of brash communication.

@grammargirl sometimes you write something and only later realise it can come across as snotty.
