I’m seeing some complaints about that event being “Shot on iPhone” not being accurate because they showed how they lit the scenes with professional lighting. I assure you that people who know how light works are impressed with the results.

“You can’t just make that video by pulling your phone out of your pocket!” — Yeah. No kidding. It turns out great production quality takes great production work. The point here is that you can capture that great production work on the phone camera in your pocket.

@Gte I don't want to be uncharitable, but sometimes it seems like people are working hard not to understand things so they can just be angry.

@jsnell Ugh. Thanks for the reminder. This _isn’t_ like your critique of the Studio Display camera. Which isn’t great and had/has some software issues. The point here is that you can use these incredibly portable, versatile, and relatively cheap cameras for all sorts of second unit, coverage, or even key shots in cramped spaces.

@Gte @jsnell I think it’s not unreasonable that “Shot on iPhone” first conjures up in people’s mind the idea that you whipped your phone out of your pocket, and then shot it. As someone definitely not in that industry, that’s my first through too.But when it’s then pointed out “Well no, it just means the *shot* was taking with the iPhone, all the normal filmography work still goes into setting the scene, lighting, etc.” It does feel purposefully obtuse to say “That’s not shot on iPhone!”

@philip @Gte @jsnell it’s fascinating how good lighting is important, and I consider it a personal failure that it’s one of the things I can’t seem to get a good intuition for… iPhone or not.On iPhone, I’m truly fascinated by what this tiny sensor can do, especially once combined with a good depth map. Combine that with good production work and the need for a “proper” camera goes down. It won’t replace my MFT gear, but it gets pretty close. And especially if stabilization is needed; Panasonic is king when it comes to stabilization, whether camcorders or MFT, but gimbals get so much easier to deal with the lighter and smaller the camera is.… hmmm, I should really put my iPhone on my “big” gimbal…
