@MikeTRose @jamesthomson I’ve had two Drobos and they both died. Or at least the power brick failed. I’ve been annoyed with them both.Currently, I use a Synology NAS and am happy with it. As a disk server it works great and accepts my TimeMachine backups. It can also run a bunch of other services I don’t care too much about but may be of interest to you.

Somehow English has returned.@gruber was kind enough to have me on The Talk Show this week. Some fun conversation about what a new Mac Pro could be, all kinds of trips down memory lane, gaming on the Mac, and some speculation about more ambient technology. We don’t talk Star Wars. Much.https://daringfireball.net/linked/2023/06/01/the-talk-show-377

People keep explaining game porting to me and it occurred to me that most people don’t know my background. I just looked it up and I shipped my first boxed PC OpenGL game, with an engine I wrote from scratch, twenty years ago this July. I picked GL at the time, despite DX3 being the industry favoured, because it was cross platform. And, for some time, had the game running on the MacOS of 2003. I’ve kept abreast of this stuff and while not still an expert do know my stuff.

@schwa My mentions have a few people soft explaining the state of things and I’m too tired to politely say, “yes, but here’s a bunch of context”.

@schwa Oh, nobody is really being a jerk. Which is nice. It’s just been a very long day and I don’t have the energy for it.

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada is being evacuated due to raging forest fires. I suspect many don’t appreciate where Yellowknife is.

I’m seeing some complaints about that event being “Shot on iPhone” not being accurate because they showed how they lit the scenes with professional lighting. I assure you that people who know how light works are impressed with the results.

“You can’t just make that video by pulling your phone out of your pocket!” — Yeah. No kidding. It turns out great production quality takes great production work. The point here is that you can capture that great production work on the phone camera in your pocket.

@jsnell Ugh. Thanks for the reminder. This _isn’t_ like your critique of the Studio Display camera. Which isn’t great and had/has some software issues. The point here is that you can use these incredibly portable, versatile, and relatively cheap cameras for all sorts of second unit, coverage, or even key shots in cramped spaces.

IBM, historically not great at rejecting antisemitism, stopping ad buys on Twitter while Apple is still writing cheques isn’t a great look.

For me, personally, I think someone spending $45,000,000 USD a month to influence an election is a bad thing.

@timbray It’s the fear of retribution that silences them. The impact on voters isn’t their concern—drawing the ire of an empowered fascist does. And so they do his work for him and muzzle themselves.

Also, the coward Jeff Bezos is claiming that Americans don’t trust news media. What Americans, and everyone else, don’t trust are the billionaires who own the media. A distinction he cannot appreciate but one his choices have only served to underscore.

For various reasons I’ve had to become pretty familiar with the MachO format over the years. It’s pretty simple but in that simplicity lies great possibilities. Like multi-architecture binaries which have eased Apple’s transition across processors over the years while avoiding the pitfalls Microsoft has had to deal with. This is a great read and worth it even if you don’t need to know the details.https://oliviagallucci.com/the-anatomy-of-a-mach-o-structure-code-signing-and-pac/
